Is there anyway I can make a very very simple recording of my guitar tracks as a scratch disk type of thing for about $200. I know its not alot to work with at all but I have a computer thats runs well, devent computer speakers, and if the speakers/good phones.

I had a sound blaster live aud. and its just terrible. Im not sure really what to do. I dont need top notch quality at all, just a simple demo of guitar tracks. Is it possible to do that for around $200? If so what are my options? ( I know not many)

Look into a 4-track recorder. Tascam and Fostex both make decent ones for about $100. And they are easy to use, and you can plug them into a soundblaster soundcard through line in off of the stereo outs of the unit and copy them to your pc with most any recording software. There are lots of them out there that are cheap. I won't mention any one name, but you can find them here;

or Google music recording software and see what you come up with.
Good luck!

$200 is a tight budget. Rokket's suggestion of a 4-track is definitely a good idea. If you would rather record directly to your computer, you have a couple of options. You don't mention your current gear, but I'm guessing from your name that you will be recording distorted guitars. The best way to do this is by recording your guitar's amplifier with a microphone.

1) get an external microphone preamp and microphone - The audio buddy preamp with a shure sm57 microphone could be plugged directly into your SB card.

2) get another interface to bypass your soundcard - Something along these lines, plus that sm57 might also work. You could also replace your soundcard.

for software to record with, you can get Kristal audio engine for free:

Neither of those options are ideal, but would definitely do what you need.

I 2nd KAE....

I am using the Kristal Audio Engine along with the KX Project drivers (both free downloads) in my setup (p3 700 with a Sound Blaster PCI512 card) and am getting a 5.33ms latency. I also am using a MXL990 mic ($59 from Musicians Friend) and a Behringer UB802 mixer ($45 local) and they do fine for me. Heres some links......

I know someone will chime in about my selections, but for my low budget these items do fine. Good luck!
