I have two questions...

1) Is Kbps - kilobytes?

and if so....

2) How can I change a file recorded at 128 Kbps to 64 Kbps? Is it possible in Adobe Audition 1.0 - if so, please give me step by step instruction.

Thank you so much

kbps is a measure of data transfer speed. Modems, for example, are measured in Kbps. It's likely the speed that it was posted at on Kazaa or whatever you download music from.

What is kilobytes

How do I find out how many kilobytes my file is? I tried clicking on the file and looking under properties....this is what I see...

44100Hz, 16-bit, Mono
Uncompressed Size: 73.09 MB (76,643,226 bytes)
File Format: mp3PRO® (FhG)
MPEG Layer-3, 128 Kbps (Mono)
Size on Disk: 13.26 MB (14,904,248 bytes)
Last Written (local): 4/18/2004 15:42:05.464
Length: 14:28.970
38,321,613 samples

The shortwave radio station I am recording programs for says to record my program in mp3 format which I have done....64 kilobytes mono is best.... How can I find out how many kilobytes my program is in? Is the 128 Kbps not kilobytes?

--MPEG Layer-3, 128 Kbps (Mono)--

This is the encoded information for the file. If you want to compress the file even more i.e. from 128 kbps down to 64 kbps...you just need a simple program like Goldwave or CoolEdit. Just open the file in the program, then go to save as...and select mp3 and then the 64 kbps.

If you play the mp3 in Winamp...it says the Kbps and Khz at the top of the player. You can't miss it.

EDIT: I see that you have Adobe Audition. I have never used this program before, however, I am sure that you can do what you want with it. You just need to DL an mp3 encoder like LAME.

Go here:

http://mitiok.cjb.net/

Install it...then reopen Adobe Audition, and goto:

File > Save As

and see if mp3 is on the list.

Isn't Cool Edit - Adobe Audition 1.0

Okay thank you....isn't Cool Edit the same as Adobe Audition 1.0 - this is what I'm using...Adobe Audition.

Gotcha

Gotcha.....I just opened up adobe audition and I see an options button to click on when saving the file to mp3....I can select 64 kilobytes there.....COOL.

Thanks

kb = kilobytes

kbps = kilobytes per second

Kilobytes is a measure of how much disc storage the file takes up. Kilobytes per second is a measure of how many kilobytes of storage are needed for 1 second of music.

A 1 second song encoded at 128 kbps will be 128 kb in size. A 10 second song encoded at 128 kbps will be 1280 kb in size.

And a bit of advise: I would not take the 128 kbps recording and re-encode it to 64 kbps. It always sounds more awful than usual when you layer encoding on top of encoding. I'd go back to the original uncompressed song and encode that at 64 kbps to begin with.

THANKS SO MUCH

I APPRECIATE THE INSIGHT SO MUCH....EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS AN AMATUER.
