Basically i've been working on this for a while. i feel i have the guitars and bass where they want to be. The vocals could do with pushing up in volume i think.

The drums however, i can't help but think that bass drum is over powering the cymbals. Like there is a drop in volume on the open hats every time the kick sounds.

Can anyone confirm this and suggest a way round it? I like how everything sounds in the mix except the inconsistent cymbals!

Cheers

How are you compressing the drums?

If you are bussing them and compressing the lot as a group, try this instead. Feed a sub-mix without the kick, or with the kick turned down, or with a low pass filter engaged, to the compressor's side-chain input.

I think your snare could use a lot more impact too.

Maybe back the "click" of the kick off a bit too, i'm guessing it's around 5K.

Ever tried parallel compression on the drums? That would let you bring up the lower level ambiant detail without killing transients.

The cymbals kind of have that YouTube, compression and artifacts sound to them. Is that from your compression or soundcloud?

Whoah, I tend to push things on the limiting side but this the definition of smashed with a sledgehammer in places. Let the 2-bus breathe a bit!

Relax the gain-reduction you're hitting on whatever compression/limiting you're doing to it and probs lower the kick level a bit :)
