can anyone explain how to get the highest possible potential volume?

Actually I might be wrong about all of this.

they say it is 32 bit floating point calcualations.

someone else might know better but I think what they are doing is keeping the, say -120 db sound floor, (20 bits) and using every bit after that as a decimal. meaning that you are superimposing more bits over the same dynamic range, giving you more resolution. At least that would make more sense. I really dont know much about this stuff.

but the same thing would apply about not being able to record a 32 bit file.

You know a whole hell of a lot more than me, but you are making sense.

Thanks

Like I said I plan to record in mostly 24, but since 32 is part of the software I feel obligated to educate myself somewhat.

my guess is that the insert the decimal at the 24th bit, creating the "floating point" calculation up to the 32nd bit. which I thought sonar and cool edit already do. I think this software is adding the ability to save your file that way, and also to record that way, when the technology becomes availabe. the other software packages automatically dither back to 24 bits when you save the file.
