I just wanted to know if a M179 on cardioid would sound the same as a M177?

The reason I ask is I like the M177 on toms, but if I purchase another or two, I would love a multi-pattern version... I just don't know if I should expect them to sound similar enough.

Should sound the same if you switch it to the pattern as the 177.
The only difference I'm aware of is it offers variable patterns.

I don't think that's an assumption that necessarily follows - Studio Projects B1 and B3 being a case in point. The electronics or capsule configuration that make the M179's patterns continuously variable rather than discretely switched might make for even more sonic difference, even though it may be set to the cardioid pattern.

You might want to contact their technical support and pose the question.

i think........ but i may be wrong.........

any thing with multipul polar patterns is (usually) going to have 2 diaphrams, and any thing with one pattern (usually) has one?????

this could make for a fairly large difference, even if everything else is the same.

Probably, yeah.
