No, Don't stop now.....

This is one of the more educational threads.... I think we learn more from these than the usual "sleeper" threads.....

You may very well have C1's out there that sound exactly like a Neumann, just because the variables in manufacturing make it probable. If you were to look at actual polar patterns of the different mics you would see a more controlled and consistant response pattern from a Neumann. The reason one is 200 bucks as a copy and the real Neumann is 2800 bucks, is that one uses precision machined parts and one uses cast parts. One uses hight quality electronics all around, one uses the lowest bidders components. Porche's and Pinto's, both are cars with alot of simularities..but the quality of the parts and workmanship are two different worlds.

Dennis,

I do agree with many of you're comments, yet technically, it is hard to agrue this point with the likes of Stephen Paul, so I would always leave that to Stephen, but at the other end of the stick despite what Stephen or Harvey say, to "me" I think the thickness counts for something in conjuction with the variables...how much, who knows, and I guess it does not matter. I only know that I get much more SPL out of a C1 over a 4033. Remember, to get something twice as loud, you only need to add 3db. So how much is much more? Anyway, it is a fun debate, and I have no problem in being on a different end than Harvey as it gets a bunch of you guys out there thinking and experimenting.

Where I disagree with you is that we do not sound exactly like a Neumann. I know you really did not make that claim, but it comes back to you're other comments I will address later. We only use a Neumann for refreshing ones ears to a sound one knows. Then, you can listen to other mics and form an opinion. We do not make claims that our mics sound like any mic, but we do use percision machined parts, and we do use the exact same components like WIMA that Neumann uses. Are the Germans better at machining than the Chinese...yes, but by how much? The German mics are not better in sound proportion to the amount of money they charge for them. I think we have shown that the build quality we can get from China is extremely good. Granted, there are some differences, but again those in "my" opinion are just not worth the substantial amount of money you have to pay to get it, especially when the end result is so very close in the studio. Of course it is not exactly the same sound, but it was not intended to be. They are darn close, and that affords many out there to get several mics for their studios while getting at least close to an equal sound quality for a lot less money. That enables them to buy more equipment to become more creative.

Good thread guys, I like all the good opinions :D
