yeah well...

Maybe that is plenty...maybe not... I still want an iso booth to stop the outside noise either way...my main concern(again), is just the sound going downstairs, I dont want any sound at all to go down there...

Oh and I think the people down there are a little crazy..I always hear them screaming !! ..I dont need that in my music..

That tells me something. If you can hear them screaming loud enough for a mic to pic it up over a direct sound in front of the mic, then it works BOTH ways. And btw, -6db is the threshold of hearing. Where did you get the reading from and under what circumstances. I don't understand exactly what you OR Csus is talking about unless I'm confusing something here.

iduno

I played a vocal and turned it up louder and louder until I could hear it downstairs...all of this was done on cool edit pro 2.0...the meter read -6db when I finally heard it downstairs...

would this be a good investment?? or would I be better off building my own??

hey rick this is what im going for..i want the door and the window on the booth to be like that..i dont want a window on the door, just that one wall of the booth I put it on..so if we could do that it would be great..you can see how I want to keep the window facing to the computer desk so the vocalist can see the person on the computer and the other way around...thanks again..

Rockwool or 703 covered with Fabric...

Dude what are you talking about? I think the moderators should start editing posts that give out obviously incorrect answers. Someone might read this and think 703 is used for sound isolation, when half the fricken battles we fight here are trying to inform new people that sound isolation and acoustic control are two totally different subjects! That's why Rick gets so damn pissed off, it's because we repeat the same shit over and over again to no avail!

Since rick seems to know his onions :) Thought I could come onboard for my first post, so go easy on me man. I NEED HELP
Got a concrete out building which is 200 feet from a not so busy road that is my studio. Do most of my bits and pieces at night, through the night(night owl) and was amazed at the amount of ambient noise my u67 picks up. My room aint cuttin it! trackin is fine, but vox is a no,no.So need to build a iso. Does all the blog apply above?
Or do I just slit my wrists? room is 16ft long x9ft wide x 6.4 high (sloped) rubber floored.

Since rick seems to know his onions
Well, not always. :o To be honest, I'm just one of the old fart HR enthusiasts who happens to have been a member here for so long the mods gave up on me, :D But heres my disclaimer..
I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination. I can suggest things based on my research, but is ALWAYS subject to those that ARE experts. However, theres no guarantee that my opinions are absolute and or 100% accurate. I try to NOT pass on "net fact", and go out of my way to link to other peoples and experts experience, knowlege when I am in doubt or in need of example

Having said that, welcome to the bbs wangchung.

Well, that depends on a variety of things.

Is this a one room studio or do you have a seperate control room?

Tell us what ALL the problems are with your vocal recording, and how you record(do you need to isolate live instruments from vocals for simultaneous recording)?

What kind of ambient noise do you hear and or pic up on the mics?

Any low rumble?

How and where do you set up the vocal mics presently?

Since environmental noise transmits into the studio, it works the opposite as well. Are you trying to keep studio sound from transmitting to the outside?

Tell us ALL about the "concrete outbuilding", roof, ceiling, walls, doors, windows, HVAC, floor and partitions. Give us a size(interior dimensions-including height and description of interior wall type(drywall over concrete?) If so, is the drywall furred out?

What kind of music/instruments. Will vocalists need room for instruments like a guitar?

Does the booth need to be disassembled for moving later or can it be built perminent?

Believe it or not, all these type things have a bearing on isolation assembly type and materials. As well as construction skills, tools, material availability, budget and transportation of sheetgoods such as drywall or MDF.

But do us a favor first wangchung Start a NEW thread of your own. That way we don't mix up answers and people can follow the thread easier. Later

Hello Shellshock and guys. Well, I've thought about this project for over a week, and this weekend I'll detail the drawings for Shellshock. But just to let you know where I'm coming from on this, let me outline the criteria for the design SOLUTION. That means, my choice of ASSEMBLY TYPE, material and construction.
Guys, I'm finally going to finish some drawings on some various type BOOTH designs. But its about time to DEMAND some damn "sticky" threads on this BBS.
Every other Studio type forum has them. I don't understand why the mods or owner of this BBS has flatly refused to add these to the forum. Frankly, I've grown tired of posting the same things over and over. No more. I'll post these series of drawings, and thats it for me unless we get some "stickys" :(

Ok, heres the criteria for this design.
1. Isolation goal. To keep vocal sound from transmitting to neighbor below.
2. Due to the existing space being an apartment, this must be a "knock down" design.
3. Budget. Approx. $500 PERIOD.
4. Skill level. Virtually non existant. :( This demands SIMPLE construction/design
5. Tools. See #4
6. Space. Very little.
7. Material transportation. Limited time frame. Meaning imediatly.
8. Must have door/window. Well, I'm not so sure about the window but we'll see this weekend
9. Time frame. Immediate need
10. Special Hardware. Must be available at Home Depot, as well as materials.
EXCEPT for Rigid Fiberglass, unless Home Depot can order it(I think, we'll see)
11. Precision custom Cutting of materials..not available. Only general NOT PRECISION cutting of panels by Home Depot. ARRRRRRGGGGGGGG!!! Oh well, Shellshock is in for a crash course in woodworking/fabrication. This means detailing ALL the parts so HE can perform this machining/assembly himself. Good greif. :D
12. Maybe more. We'll see.

Well guys, MY goal is to design and post this by Sunday night. :p
Shellshock, I'm going to send you a list of questions tomorrow morning. I want ALL of them answered by Saturday night. PLEASE.

Well, here goes. Later.
