Does anybody here use synths? I don't have the br-1600 yet, but I'm trying to decide between it and the korg d1600mkII.

What I'm reading about the inputs kind of worries me even though I'm leaning toward the boss.

Using a synth in input 1 or 2... could I use the guitar/bass or vocal mode to record tunes from the synth to different tracks?

Also if I use a drum/bass machine... can I record it to an audio track? or must I use the the set bass or drum tracks?

woooh!!..damn talk about confusing! I cam here because a friend was looking at a BR1600 and i didn't know anything about it ....if this routing is this discomboulated....
Maybe this will simplify things and help a few decsions be made.I have a Korg D-16 which is the older model of the D1600 mkii

The main difference is the d-16 has permantely paired stereo tracks(9-10.11-12,13-14,15-16...which means only true stereo can be performed on these tracks. Like most synth patches..in other words the left out put would record only on track 9 and the right input only on track 10.....on the mixer there is only one fader for both tracks you can pan though.but it doesn't pan the track only turn one of them up or down....I know a bit confusing ..i have a feeling the BR 1600 is the same..

Okay now the D1600mkii ..it has 16 faders ..no group track/channels.You can still record stereo to them it's just more versatile.(point D1600mkii)

The routing on the D1600mkii is cake!!

One button push (input) page shows you the tracks 1-8..you choose from 8 inputs what track to record the input to.....viola ...done..The next page does the same for 9-16.

There are no limitations on which FX to use for what type of input (that seems weird to me)

There's a possible
8 inserts for recording or play back.(there's other algorithms for stereo Fx and whatnot)

on top of that there are 2 Master FX sends (reverbs delays chorus ..lots of stuff!) for monitoring and mixdown...remember you can use the 8 insert Fx for mixdown also ..

then a mastering Fx for the final stereo mix.

..then if you want more you can send any track or input signal OUT into a FX box and return it.

The reality is if you want a lot of FX you can just bounce tracks and keep on adding infintium....

The Korg is about as user freindly as it gets..The buttons are clear the menus are sensible ENGLISH...the touch screen just makes it zip along.....From what i under stand the D16000 has a hot swapable hardrive thats you can use a lot of different models.

It has it's drawbacks

The Cueing on mine sucks...No FX...so if i want to monitor my tracks in the cue section it's all dry...

No grouping for faders...I think most units don't have that.

I don't like the buttons for input -playback record mode......you have to push each one off instead of having a universal......I'm lazy!!

Other things I like

Trigger in.....I have friend send me rythm tracks with a count in metronome as soon as the D-16 hears it it starts recording at 00.000.00 ..now our tracks will always line up.

Wav form window ..for editing.....from what i hear the BR 1600 doesn't have this....the resolution isn't as tight as a puter but it's nice....
I got all tthe basic copy/move edits plus

fade in (some don't have that)
Optimize (like a disc de fragger for eleminating dead space
Normalize 9raising the overall level to odb

You can pre or post fader or see in a line graph where info is on the track.(thats a very handy tool when editing)

Scrub(like slowy moving the tape faster or slower ) is great for more precise location markers for editing you can use the main wheel to scrub with

EQ on both input or track

built in mic for VERY fast inspiration recording..

Nuetrik XLR/14/ inputs

quick scroll wheel

Backup files..

import or export wav files

use tempo maps

built in drim machine (rudimentary)

chain up to 7 scsi hardrives (or CDR as one of them) togther for up to 1000 gigs (yeah thats one thousand)

can link two together

The price looks great right now I think it's arounfd $1000....I got mine 5 years ago used for $850

There is a very good site dedicated to these machines with extremly knowledgable admin......a virtual tech help for free.....

can you tell i like this machine!!

I wondering if I should have NOT bought a boss, and went that route instead....

I know how you feel Matt.I have (had) a ton of Roland stuff. I just got tired of translating and losing chunks of hair that I valuably need. I know theres a millions of folks that love this stuff but ...

I saw where someone was selling the recomended CD burners for the BR1180 at the amazing low price of only $199 down from $279 or something like that. Now considering you can use almost any CD burner on the Korg (and scsi at that ) for under $100......they are te kings of the add ons and MUST use their stuff at inflated prices. then they discontinue a line.....!!

How many variations do they have to make of a recorder.....sorry Some one gonna kick my virtual ass but Roland is getting way to big. I live about 20 mile from the repair center (main American site) and they were of very little help.I had to talk to the main guy. I had a Synth pickup there for 6 weeks that took 5 minutes to fix!!( Iknow cause my buddy had the same problem and he did his himself).....

Okay I'm ranting..so my parting remarks are ...dang ol shoot man i tull ya wut man i just dang ol love Roland dang old manlike.THEY"RE THE BEST!! :D
