Folks,

I tried to do a blues song. Eh, I had a fun time doing it. But I need some serious input on the mix.

It's called "A Darker Shade of Blue" and it's here: http://www.mp3.com/smartapple

Anyway, I hope you like it cuz I had a blast doing this one.

Thanks everyone!

I forgot to mention -- please try to listen to the HI-fi version if you can. Thanks again.

Teddie...

Your voice is a natural for this stuff dude!
Nicely arranged too. Tell ta what, I ain't a big blues fan UNLESS it's well done in every bit and form.

This is well done. Hats off to ya dude. :)

Nice dissonant bass chops too...

Carry On dooooooooood.

Teddie,

Fantastic, took a blues tune, and kept it interesting all the way through, and man that can be hard to do.

Great bass, great mix!

Was that a drum machine? If so I want one, sounded real.

Keep up the good work!

Very nice Teddie! I especially enjoyed the vocal & guitar doubling on the melody.
Nice chops all the way through. Your voice works very well with the blues.
as always, very nice work.
Brad

Ric, thanks man! My vox enjoyed singing this.

GT, thanks for listening and thanks for the compliment. I actually could not get the mood for this song I was looking for with my Roland R-70 drum unit. I ended up editing one of the drum tracks that came with my multi-tracking software.

Brad, thanks much. Yah, that vocal/guitar doubling part is my wife's favorite part of the song. My next song is going to be a porn-tune (wink) - called "Pooh Screw". Where can I find that tune of yours man?... I'm all intrigued and curious.

Folks, I'm wondering about the main guitar solo (after the vocal/guitar part)... Anyone think something funked up with it? Something about it doesn't sound right to me the more I listen to it.

The vocals are very appropriate for this song! I love the drum sound... it sounds "live"... really does sound like you're in a bar listening to the band. And a typical blues bar too... i.e. nothing's through the PA but the vocals, and everything else is stage-throw. I also like how it's not really a strict 12-bar blues.

Now for suggestions: The clean guitar could use some more of the "right" verb to make it more "bluesy". Most of the good blues amps (Deluxe Reverb, Super Reverb, etc), have tube-reverb units, and the blues guys really use 'em. The solo at 2:30 has some verb, but it's a little too short, snappy, and in-your-face.

Also, IMHO, the really "dirty", "metal", solid-state-sounding guitar solo at 3:10 is incongruous and kinda runs against the low-down smokey, B.B. King vibe the rest of the song has going on. I'd rather hear a good cleaner, or at least "Stevie Ray Vaughan" dirty tone there. But that's just my opinion.

Bottom-line, this is good stuff. I liked it!

Charles, thanks much for listening to it.

I'm going to mess around with some verb on those clean parts... and I agree with you on the dirty guitar solo... I think that's what's bugging me about it. I'll see about redoing that part. Thanks again for the input and the compliments.

Hey bro, you need to follow me on down to clarksdale MS and do some of that stuff, them people down there wouldn't let you off the stage doing that down home blues stuff.

Your making me fucking sick man your just to damm good :D,,I love this teddie great work, I got a blues tune I'm gona throw at you in a day or two keep your eyes open...peace

Yeah on the voice, the bass, the playing, everything...agree with the dirty git being outta place though....this clinic is getting some good stuff being run through it, makes me wanna hide my head and not post any of my crap at all...I...I...I'm not worthy....gibs

Whoa, nice chops. I like the vocal/guit doubling part, but I want to hear both parts a little better. I had a similar prob and Ric suggested panning the guitar a bit... it made all the difference in the world.

Other than that, another really good tune dude.

Thanks for that tune! Just got home from work on my birthday and was feeling like playing the blues... I love those A flat blues, and so did Marilyn. Thought your lead idea blew mine right out of the water. I just tried to stay out of its way. If you'd like to check it out I'll post it at my site and add a link to your mp3.com site for the original. The 128bps version is something like 4.63 MB. Definitely the funkiest sound I've gotten in a while. The 192 version is much nicer!
Thanks Again.

Hi
bugger the HIFI version we'll just download the whole lot and all the songs off your site...mate you can sing, HOT bass HOT guitar
SUPER HOT vocals these arrangements and talent are better than a lot of the number 1 stuff on the US, UK, AUST top 40 charts....
dont take this the wrong way but your guitarin sounds a little bit like Robert Cray your not black ...err i mean coloured are you cz something comes across in your music that you dont here every day .........and i CANT stop listening to the song now...think hard about pullin that solo out on the gibson it fits quiet nicely although it would sound good on another songs too that type of sound. Some of the clean lead gets a bit muddled if any thing but the Stevie Vai part sounds awsome down the neck on that Gibson. Ive been playin 20 odd yrs and im not that fast LOL

Good Stuff
Tony

Hey sounusman
youve got to hear some of this guys other stuff.....

Tip Teddie try encoding at 192kbs

Tony

David, hehe. Thanks man! Clarksdale MS it is! Yah, man, I'd like to here that blues tune you're working on... Keep me posted.

gibs, hiya bro - thanks for listening... I'm thinking about redoing that solo in a bluesier, yet still dirty tone. I don't know if I want to change the way the riff is played though, I really like it... but the tone of it is really really dirty and thin (to me). I think Charles (up there in the post) suggested a more Stevie V. tone... I'll try :) By the way, you are worthy, my friend... You're worthy and gosh-darnit buckaroo, people like you.

pglewis, thanks for listening, man and for the compliment. You're right, I was really trying to make the guitar and the vox blend. Remember that song called (I can't fully remember) but I think it was called "Masquerade". It was an old (not so old) R&B tune, I think. The singer did a really nice job of blending his little "bloody bloo's" in with the guitar... I failed on this and the majority of people have said it sounds more like I'm being muffled by a pillow (which no doubt would be my wife while I'm asleep...) When I redo the solo, I'm going to try the panning... thanks for the suggestion... I needed to fix it.

drstawl, you're welcome, hehe. Happy Birthday, man! Mine is today (May 24th)... I'm kinda confused as to what you were saying about the lead idea (?) Help me understand... (sorry - ignorance on my part takes hold of me) Thanks for listening, and again, Happy Birthday!

tutton, thank you thank you thank you. The encouragement is wonderful. Wow, a Robert Cray reference. Man, I used to listen to Robert Cray when I was about 10 or 12 years old I think. He had these two songs that were really topping the charts back then (what were the names of those songs?)... Nah, I'm not African American. I'm actually Filipino (Phillipines) - "Asian" I guess is the Politically Correct term (?). Both my parents are Filipino, but I was born in D.C. and lived around here all my life. So are you saying you liked the solo in "Darker Shade..."? Which one, the first one or the second? Thanks again for the encouragement, input, and just for listening.

I've got another compliment for ya Teddie. When you repeat the word "...blue" in the chorus, it reminds me of Malford Milligan.

If you aren't familiar with his singing, check out the band Storyville. The drummer & bassist for the band used to be with the Arc Angels who were formerly SRV's Double Trouble. Anyway, Malford has a great blues voice.

And BTW, happy birthday!! :D

Nice tune, great singing, really enjoyed the guitar work.

I listened to the lo-fi version, and it sounded really good (for lo-fi), So I can imagine the hi-fi and mp3 sound that much better.

I did find the distorted a lead a bit up front, (just what you wanted, someone critisizing the lo-fi version... sounded kinda mono too :)) maybe with a bit more verb and some panning it might smooth it up a bit.

Great work.

And belive me thats a Great thing!

I can dig it man... nice song. I am a big fan of the blues and good guitar playing. I like the distorted guitar lead towards the end, I think it fits the song. As in all your songs I've heard, great vocals.

Teddie, another good tune. I like Which Way and Morning Light, a lot, and I'll have to say, I wasn't crazy about this one the first time I heard it, but I'm glad I waited to post because its growing on me fast. I do like blues, and blues flavored stuff your voice sounds real good in this one. I didn't think the heavy guitar near the end was that out of place. As you said the tone was kind of thin but I would keep the sustain. I know sometimes when I get a good take, especially if its the first one, I hate to redo it even if the tone isn't quite right. But the thing that initially struck me as strange was the absence of a rythmn guitar through most of the song. I thought a subtle and tasteful rythmn, would have sounded good, but after listening to it again I'm thinking maybe this was the sound you were going for(with just the drums and bass). These are just some of the things that popped in my head while listening, but basically your stuff is awesome and keep it up. I think the song you guys were refering to was a George Benson song and I believe it was called This Masquerade, pretty smooth jazzy song with the guitar/vocal thing. ....Peace...Ray J
