Blue Screen Of Death!?

My apologies, simply glanced at the Bold text under your name that said "New Member."
You just haven't given any useful information in the last 12 years, as your last 3 posts of your 4 were apparently on this thread.

No worries
I have no intention on posting just to get my posts count up, and certainly dont care what people think of me. I just wanted to help that guy to the best of my ability, and in the most cost effective manner.

Around that year you must have had one of these..... 1981 Personal Computer
I had two of them :)

I remember the TI-99 well, although I didn't have one. My first comp was a second hand Timex/Sinclair using a portable cassette as storage: Timex Sinclair 1000 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I pretty quickly discovered it was useless, and didn't get another computer until I could afford a Commodore 64. I got active in a computer club and then started selling computers. I eventually realized that the service/tech area was more fun and a lot less stress than sales, and I've been doing it ever since.

And YES every flavor of Windows uses a swap file of some sort. But it seemed pretty clear that this wasn't the source of the guy's problem. Nothing personal.

So, here's something funny.... I have the same card as you and recently upgraded my computer to an i7 Quad core. I now get BSOD's *everytime* i boot up. It's basically a completely new build; new mobo, new cpu, new memory, new hard drive, new O/S install, new software install, etc.

I'll start the computer, it'll boot into windows and immediately blue screen itself. I turn it off and back on and then it'll run forever. After using it, I turn it off for the day, next day go to turn it on and BSOD!!

Anyways, just another data point.
I'm wondering if there is something with the EMU driver that can't handle quad cores because it worked fine when I was using Win7 64bit on a Core2Duo system. It is a beta driver after all. Is that the same driver you are using? 2.30?

I would experiment, but I've got an early morning flight for a business trip and I don't want to go poking around my computer tonight. Maybe you've got time this week to try it for us. Pull the card and remove all the drivers. See if it still BSOD's on you.

Maybe I really don't need this board anymore as I have another interface that works well. Hmmm... what to do...

Bringing this thread back for the Doc.

I bought a new SSD drive to replace the C: drive in my computer. I had to reload the O/S (Win7 64bit) and everything else except the EMU stuff. I pulled the card out, too. No more EMU for me and I haven't had any BSOD's (knock on wood). Although there are a lot of variables, I still believe EMU doesn't handle quad-core cpu's very well.

Remember what I said in my earlier post ^^^^^ It worked great with Win7 64bit on my Core2Duo. When I switched to an I7 is when it started with the BSOD's.

Anyways, just another data point from a Now-Happy camper.

Oh wow! I wonder what's going on here? :D

I've been away, working in the theatre last two and a half weeks and not had chance to do any tinkering or keep up with the threads.

No, the problem isn't fixed. Yet...

I haven't dared change anything because I needed the computer each morning to check emails then having to rush out to work.

I was intending on wiping the drive and buying the Win 7 disc I've been promised. Otherwise, I'm agreeable to trying what Redlad suggested - but there isn't much point if I do go with Win 7 this week. But anyway, thank you for taking the time. I actually have no idea what you're talking about or how I can fix my computer from Google (seems a bit weird to me) but as always I won't knock something until I've tried it. Thanks again.

Regards

V

Okay, short version: Get rid of the EMU card and drivers.

Stuff is all removed. Still blue screens. The card doesn't show up in the device manager and I've cleaned the registry (fucking reg. I hate windows!) I'm ditching XP soon and going with 64bit 7. After all, this is a Quad core system that can benefit from having more memory, which I can't use under XP. Then I'll start again.

I'm also going install it onto my AMD single core DAW computer as well, (which never touches the internet) and keep a copy of my DAW software on the internet/ office machine as back up.

Later, and when funds allow, I'll be looking for a hardware recorder and keep the computer just for editing and mastering.

For the unforeseeable future, it looks like I'm stuck with PCs and Windows as I can't afford to just splash out on a Mac right now. As long as I take some of the burden off the computers and divert it into specially made hardware in future, I think I'll start getting more reliability at least. But I haven't stopped eyeing up the Macs... one day... one day...

The BSoD means there's a hardware issue somewhere. Something in your computer isn't happy. You may want to swap the hard drive to a different tower and see if you can still boot from the drive. If you can't, the hard drive is to blame. That'd at least be a good first step.

Blue screen usually appears when the hard drive is slowly dying or damaged.
You might want to get all the info out while its still working.

You dont need 64bit 7 unless you have more then 4Gb RAM.

Thanks for the tip.

I will have, when I've bought some more...

Now this thing won't even save a Photoshop file because allegedly, there's not enough RAM. Now my printer has packed up after putting in new ink. Working perfectly last week, it was... but I need it TODAY. So I use another computer and I'm getting error messages when I come to eject my USB pen drive. How many things can go wrong in one day, between three separate machines?!

I want to take everything with a silicone chip in it out into the back garden, smash it to pieces and never touch another damn computer again in my life. But of course, I'm living in a world that you all created where you can't do nuthin' without a computer and I'm the only person who can't do nuthin' with a computer.

Actually, I don't want to just delete all computers - I actually want to delete the whole of the 21st Century.

I'm off to take an extra dose of anti-depressants and hope tomorrow is a better day.
