big knob vs central sataion

I looked at both of these units, but in the end went with the Samson C Control. I just couldn't justify the expense yet for my modest setup. So far, I'm pretty impressed with it. I use it primarily to switch monitor sources.

i dont know much about the big knob, besides what i read in tape-op, but ive been using my central station for about 3 months now, and i really dig it. its passive, its not on my desk, and my personal fav..its got some kickass led meters. pretty lite make happy. :p

I demoed the Central Station at Presonus and I've got to say that it's a great piece. I am planning on getting one real soon. For the price, they sure made a piece of equipment of way better quality than you'd expect at the price point. And the passive signal path isn't marketing jargon either, it produces tangible results.

I haven't tried the big knob, but I'd imagine the Central Station would blow it out of the water.

freshmattyp,

You mention you are satisfied with the Samson. Do you care to elaborate. for about $100 that may be a very cost effective option for many of us with relatively modest needs.

Were you able to A/B it to the Presonus or the Mackie? I did not know Samson had such a unit, but now that I did a search, I'm interested.

Compared the 3 choices yet?

Has anyone here A/B'd any pair of the three choices yet? C-Control v Big Knob v Central Station (v C-Control)...?

Can anyone confirm that the Samson is bady compromised audio wise compared with the Big Knob -- ie not transparent, mushes up transients, misrepresents freqs above 10K well, etc. ? I read reviews at zzzounds to that effect.

I need a physical cutoff between my Motu 896 and my Mackie 824 actives. I'm thinking of building a balanced signal path with one hard switch - period. No ic's. Maybe a mult to a TRS headphone / preamp out.

Thanks,

Toe

I didn't like the C-Control once I had one in a controlled situation. Lots of detail just not coming through.

For $99, it's great for a hobby-only setup, but it doesn't have "the juice."

Think of it as the Alesis 3630 of monitor switching.

Does anyone care to comment about the D/A conversion on the Presonus? Going from my Digi002 to the Central Station via S/PDIF sounds appealing.

Hello =)

I am glad to come across this forum.

I was looking at the Big Knob and came across this thread so now I'm considering the PreSonus.

I am using some Sennheiser HD600s and I was wondering if anyone here has used these cans with the Central Station and how it sounds.

TIA,
Doug

From what I've heard from several people, it's surprisingly good...most recently I had a friend who picked one up, and when he connected it to his M Box via S/PDIF he said it was not a subtle difference...like someone had taken a heavy packing blanket off of his speakers or something like that. He brought his wife (who has a good musical ear, but is not an engineer or anything) down to his studio to hear it and she heard the difference as well.

The only negative thing I've heard about it overall is that the headphone amps aren't that great.
