Very cool Newatthis.

I am not going to hardwire stuff to the extent that you did. I will likely continue to work with snakes and do some hard wiring.
It looks like you have neighbors. What all did you do to try soundproof the outside walls? I am going to be pretty close to neighbors and in a pretty ritzy nieghborhood. I am going to insulate to beat hell and double drywall. Don't want to spend tons on that part, but I don't want the nieghbors having fits either;)

I'll get pictures as soon as I can.

nice one F.S. :)

and newatthis - i like all the pictures you took for your studio build! probably one of the most extensive photo diary jobs of a studio from the floor up i've seen. i'm enjoying looking through them.:)

Andrew.

Thanks Andydeedpoll ;)

Congrats! don't forget about that cristal&pole dancers housewarming party now!

Thats a party I want to attend. :D ;)

FS as far as what I did for sound isolation....I too live in the neighborhood that isnt the best for being able to disrupt people. I have a doctor who lives only about 20ft away from the Studio and he works crazy hours, so that was taken into consideration with the build.

What I did from the outside in (in this order) was:

** Vinyl Siding (maybe not the best choice due to potential vibration, but after I ran into a bad situation with Hardy Stucco panels, I went to/with vinyl siding (plus it matched the house). I figure if the sound isnt dead enough by that stage, then I have bigger problems to worry about. :D
next
** 2 layers of 5/8 exterior sheeting covered with Tyvek
** Exterior framing 2X6 walls
** R-19 unfaced insulation in those 2X6 walls (went unfaced so there wasnt another leaf in the system)
** About a 3" air gap
** Then framed another 2X4 wall (the room within the room - M-A-M theory) and made sure it was TOTALLY uncoupled (does not touch anywhere except the 6" concrete floor which I also totally insulated underneith the concrete)
** Then insulated the 2X4 walls as well with faced insulation (which will go against the drywall) so there is a vapor barrier in the system as required/requested by codes. (this now gives about a foot of total insulation within the walls)
** Then I bought Quiet Puddy and totally encased every switch and outlet box in the whole room
** Then I am putting up 2 layers of 5/8 drywall everywhere with Green Glue between all the sheets on the walls and ceiling.
** The back wall will not have 2 layers of drywall, but instead 1 layer, then Green Glue and Plywood over top as the 2nd layer, then I will be putting up stone covering that complete wall. This should help with sound dispursement I hope. :D
** Then I will paint the walls
** Finally I ordered 96 - 1ft squares of aurlex absorbers and corner traps and I will install them as the room calls for them (as needed / if needed) as well as in the control room area.

So,,,,this is how I built the room, and who knows how well it will work until its done. If it does not work, after all this, I will probably just stand there and laugh, then go make a Captain and Coke and go ask the neighbors how much they like music? :D :D

The most tricky part of the build was the room within the room build, and keeping it totally uncoupled so there is no flanking. The interior room was able to be moved by pushing on it while only framed since it was only anchored at the floor. Yesterday I removed the braces which I added to stability, and it is now sturdy. The drywall does the trick stiffening it up. Codes Department had a field day with this build as well. They thought building a studio was cool. I passed all inspections with flying colors and had to make zero changes in order to pass. That was a good thing.

Anyway, with your new house, just go the extra mile in making it right. I think you'll be happy you did when its complete as I hope I am with mine. (wonder if I can talk the wife into a new SSL digital console under the "go the extra mile theory"? ;) ;) lol

Stay safe
AJ

or if they come knocking angry about the drums at 3am just go

"yeah! what a bastard! i hate it when people do that!"

"it's you." "no it isn't! but don't worry, i'll tell him off, if i ever catch him, which is unlikely the bastard!" and storm off.

works for me. if i do something wrong in rehearsal and the conductor looks at me, i just give a funny look at the person sat next to me. :D

I knew it wasn't time to give up completely !

Ya closer neighbors than I want too. But on the up side. The house next door just went on the market for $575,000 and by the time we have everything done on this we will be waaaaaaay below that. and there's only a neighbor on one side. It will always be that way too because the house is bordering a public park and a bike trail that goes back to a wildlife reserve.

We will see how long we are there. We will boviously be in a very good position equity wise to sell in a couple years and move out to the boons if we want. Well we wanted to move out of town this time, but property is pretty expensive around here being 30 miles from Portland. We never could have bought a house big enough to have a nice studio in.

I'll keep you all updated.

Thanks True

what a great story.....well done FS!!!!!

Thanks Superspit. Still have to have our offer accepted.
We offered asking price plus $100 to try and get it over with.
I don't expect any problems. The bigger question is what all the work is going to cost. As long as that is acceptable to us everything will be cool.

Cool Freud. I can feel your excitement!! I love hearing about someone reaching inside their dream...no matter how small that reach is...it surely leads to the fulfillment of getting there....best of luck to you and your wife and looking forward to those updates.:)

FLIP THAT HOUSE MAN!!! Congrats!

Haha.... I Don't know. I guess it all depends on how much we like it. One could really get used to it;) Either way we come out good. It might become a live in retirement fund.

Congratulations! It was looking grim a few posts back, but it sounds like it all turned out well. Great view.

Thanks man.

Ya we were amazed when we heard.
We are writing a check for the ernest money today;)

Here's what will be the control room / vocal booth area. Our agent to the left.
It's hard to get a shot of the main room. I am taking these pictures from the main room.
Not shure now big I am going to make the control room. Probably a bit larger than the beadroom I am using now so that I can have more seating.

Eight years in two small bedrooms;) Me and the guys hardly ever get together to just jam. four guys, drums, amps and speakers in a 12 x 12 room is not much fun for jamming:( The controll room here will be bigger than the space I am in now.

I'm pretty stressed now:D We have got to get our current house to sell soon!

Fun, Fun, Fun. but I guess no risk no reward.
