just bought new gear like consender mike (TSM MT87S with pad and low cut) Mixer is a Compact mixer (Phonic MU1002 with two mike lines) and soundcard is M-Audio Audiophile's 24/96.. my friend has the same hardware as i but the thing is that im not pleased with the quality of the sound... my friend doesn't have the same problem.. his s*** sounds decent .. Im using adobe audition 2 to record (ASIO drivers are switched ON, im recording stereo with 24/96) but im not sure if im using the right ratio or threshold when compressing the vocals.. With EQ around 16db the sound is "pretty" clean but i think it's too clean.. at least i think the sound much be richer. I hope someone could help me!!

ps. im miking rap vocals..

If you are adding 16db of EQ that's probbably it. If I misunderstood then please explain.

It sounds like you probably should compare notes with your friend. If he is doing the same kind of recording with the same gear but his results are better, then the first thing I'd do is ask him what he did and use that to figure where I strayed.

Yeah, not sure what "EQ around 16db" means, but I'm guessing your looking for a fatter sound? Couple a things.... try using proximity effect to your advantage (get closer to the mic), and try doubling your vocals (record it again to another track, performing it exactly the same as the 1st track).

aye, closer to the mic generally means fatter/thicker sound

I am also confused by "EQing around 16db"...............if you're adding 16db of say 250-400hz then I'd say rethink & as SSG pointed out a comparison of notes with your friend would go a long way

16db strikes me as a lot of EQ

Just thought of this. Are you just recording one take to stereo? There are a couple threads in the Cool Edit Forum that go over that one. But it boils down to clicking the 'Left' bullet in the record setting for the track, which is the white input on the back of the 24/96. Red is right.

As far as the compression... start out with one of the vocal presets in the dynamics processor and tweak from there. They aren't the best, but if you are just starting to get the feel for compression they are a good place to start.

And maybe now you see why it isn't always the gear you have but who's running it. But keep playing with it till you get what you want.

Well i solved the problem after all.. Adobe has a monitoring for asio drivers and it developes some kind of natural reverb that made the vocals sound blurry and echoing.. when i changed it's values to external my voice became fatter and it sounded lot better..
