Question for all you pros out there. I purchased a new Beta 57 off of ebay from a dealer in china. It came with all the warrenty information and stuff that should be included in the original box. I was wondering if there could be a possibility of this mic being a fake. I don't have any beta 57s from any local stores to compare it to. Maybe a scam? The mic seems to work fine - just a little curious...

Hi Bob,

I bought one also, and have had no problems with it. It sounds and looks authentic.

Cheers,
Dan

Dan - I'm glad to hear that it works for you. Mine sounds pretty good - a little trebley but I bet it's going to work wonders for the snare.

Pictures

Here are the pictures I took. Does everything look like a normal beta 57? Thank you guys so much for helping me out.

That's either the real thing, or a damn good copy :)

There is a company in China that is making copies of Shures for companies like Superlux. The capsules for those look different than this (they have a football like dome in the center) and the band around the grill is black, not blue. There could be recent changes to the copies. The Superlux mics sound darn good. I have a beta 57 copy, but don't have a real beta 57 to compare it to. The graphs for the copies are almost identical.

I'll be interested to know what you find out.

I sold mine, but from what I remember yours looks like what mine looked like.

...on pg.26 of the current issue of Prosound News, the headline reads "SHURE SHUTS DOWN THAI COUNTERFEITERS"...

...the article goes on to describe a very large shipment of fake SM58 and other Shure mics that was recently seized by customs authorities...Rob Ascough, managing director of Shure Asia was quoted as saying, "These raids also yeilded a significant amount of information that will allow us to conduct further operations to strike at the manufacturing sources of these counterfeits. We will continue to pursue those who seek to deceive our customers."

...the article closes stating, "To date, Shure has successfully conducted operations to stem intellectual property breaches in many countries including Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand."

...needless to say, beware of Shure mics being sold on Ebay from sellers originating in the countries listed above...Ebay now lists "country of origin" for sellers...for example, type "Shure microphone" into the search window on Ebay and once the search loads the pages of items available, look under the column heading "shipping to USA"...you'll see sellers originating from the countries listed in the article...of course, this is not conclusive evidence that these sellers are moving counterfeit goods (nor am I making any such implication)...simply buyer beware...

Just before xmas I used "buy it now" on a 57 & 58 on two auctions by the same seller. Luckily I didn't hit "pay now" right away......ebay sent me the folowing emails....

I believe that both mics WERE fakes!

I don't buy stuff from asia off ebay. Got my beta57 off an Aussie dealer.
I remember reading "made by shure in Mexico" on some of the documentation.

I hope it's real.

Yeah I play it safe, deal domestically. Most of the time if it seems too good to be true, it is.

Mine looks a little different with the grill removed. No yellow band like in your picture. Does yours have Shure stamped into the black plastic when looking at it from above with the grill removed?
