What about the ADK SC-1? I've heard good stuff about them, and they're well within your budget.

Any thoughts?

Tom

I've got a pair of these - used them as overheads and on acoustic guitar(in XY-config it sounds great). I've even used 'em for vocals :o

One has to watch out with the highs though, just like with most chinese budgetmics.

First, bgavin, I am not dissing you, so have a cup of decaf. No, I cannot evaluate build quality in any practical way. I can tell you, as I did, that the C-4's weigh less than the Oktavas, and that I think lighter gauge steel has been used in the capsule and transformer body. That tells me nothing about the temper of that steel. Yes, I can test it with a diamond punch, acid etch it, determine its Rockwell C hardness, and then I can tell you just how durable this piece of scrap metal was.
I haven't taken them apart, nor do I plan to, so I cannot evaluate whether circuit boards or point to point soldering was used, or the gauge and quality of any internal wiring. I simply disagree that you can look at a piece of equipment and determine its build quality. All you can see is fit and finish, which is very deceptive. No one can look at a mic and tell you what will happen when you drop it on a concrete floor without doing it.
I have never had any microphone of any kind fail me because- all switches are handled carefully, none of my mics has ever been bashed, kicked, bounced, vibrated, spit on, immersed, or abused in any way at any time. And guess what? Given that, build quality becomes almost irrelevent.
If you believe you can look at a mic and determine its durability and build quality, by just looking, I'd love to know what you're looking for, because I believe that you are looking at illusion. Cheap flimsy products can be made to look every bit as sturdy as the real thing. The only way you know the difference is when a unit is stressed and fails. I don't stress my mics, and they don't fail.
Now, I did point out that there were some transient issues with the sprong loaded contact on the transformer body, and more serious issues with the shock mounts, because those are the areas where problems developed, in over a year of frequent use.
I've gone out of my way to share my practical experience with these mics for your benefit, not for mine, and I believe that I am not the one who has been rude here. However, I have my days, too, so when I get perfect, I'll go into the messiah business. Until then, if I have inadvertently insulted you, I apologize. But we will have to agree to disagree here- build quality is not easily determined visually, but only by the performance and repair record of the product. Fit and finish is visible, but is a *very* poor indicator of overall build quality and durability.-Richie
