ahhhhhh i urge you to go listen to THE S U N D A Y S

Their last album Static an silence mmmmmmm the lush sweet tones of harriet wheeler

type her name into your browser and you will find all you want on the sundays and harriet

also another smaller band from australia A band called the Sunnyboys they made a 12 inch and 7 inch single which was released by Phantom records before their major album was released mainstream many said this early effort captured the bands rawness compared to the later recording which seemed to have lost what the band achieved so early on Produced by

L O B B Y L O Y D E
Engineer Ian grey recorded at T R A F A L G A R S T U D I O S
Oct 80 this recording essp the 12 inch sounds great very basic too shows you what you can do keeping it simple love the drum tracks on this ep tracks are love to rule, alone with you,
what you need, the seeker. i heard the tracks on this ep were recorded at lower levels to achieve the end result that they did

Ill also include bigstar in on this maybe not in the league sound wise as my above too artist pics but wow the content alone of radio city and record #1 was what inspired many who knew what the word pop really meant

another band from australia worth digging for is even listen to their second album come again wow you will know that ash Naylor was really in touch or in sync lennon mc cartney wise he really must have understood rubber soul and revolver through and through when even made come again ahhhhhhh you just got to hear this album then my words will become real to you too :-))

Yessss sire!
Along with
.) "Amused to death" by Roger Waters - one of the must-have records for all engineers
and most of the recordings of
.) Curtis Mayfield - his way of recording and mixing room into his records is still unreached.

My own prison. Best I have heard in a while

I would have to say one of the best I have heard lately is Creed-My own prison.
The balance and the depth are awsome on a killer set of phones.
I have a flat response set of headphones that tell it like it is and you will hear stuff you never knew existed on say almost any pink floyd album. I piped my own prison threw them and was very impressed. You can imagine the way the songs were before the producer worked his magic on them. Some of the backup arangements are really cool.

Im sorry I ever said Orgy's Vapor Transmission is the best produced record ever. How wrong was I....

Mer de Noms by A Perfect Circle is awesome!
They're the best band I've ever heard, although Howerdell(sp?) wrote all the git, bass, and drum parts! :)

Awesome producing too. THe last track "end" is very eerie in a Pink Floyyd(sp?) kind of way. Creeps you out.

Damnit, Trebles !

I was going to mention the Sundays.

Honorable mentions:

* Blind ('92) is such a dreamy and ambient piece of work. Itoxicating.

*As far as what's been done in the last 10 years, I'd have to give the nod to Okay Computer - basically for the same reasons as I give for Dark Side (see below).

*Jon Brion deserves a shoutout for his Work on Fiona Apple's "When the Pawn." Very simple production, but the vocal, percussion, and piano all sound beautiful. Give it a listen.

*From the last 20-30 years, I would have to say Dark Sid of the Moon. Not necessarily for it's technical brilliance (The drum sound is truyly awful, IMHO). Dark side was truly amazing in that it was faithful to Pink Floyd's artistic and experimental (drug induced?) style . . . yet radio-ready enough to please the masses for many years to come. Bin Laden will win a nobel piece prize before classic rock stations stop playing this album.

*As far as heavier music goes, someone mentioned Martin Birch. I like the way he was able to make each instrument sit so distinctly in the mix. Each player's individual talents really shined. And Mutt Lange did some great work on Pyromania (and many others).

Best of all time?

Still, I have to give the nod to Michael Jackson's Thriller (honorable mention to "Off the Wall"). Only reason is because Quincy Jones was able to put together a money-making, record-selling machine. From a mastering standpoint, it sounded great on all mediums . . . be it the disco, rollerskating rink, ghetto blaster/boom box, or in mono (MTV). :)

When all is said and done, the goal is to sell records, and that he did. Has anyone topped it yet?

My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless" is pretty perfect. It lulls you when played at a low volume and scares you to death when it's cranked.

Another great sounding record is "Keep It Like a Secret" by Built to Spill. Guitar players should really check this one out. It's on Warner Brothers. Guitarist Doug Martsch layers the lines on one after another, but Phil Ek's engineering gets 'em separated nicely and if you listen to it on a hi-fi, be prepared for depth.

Amen on the BTS album. It's one of the records I use to figure out if my mixes are good enough.

The Eagles - Hotel California.

I believe that it took over a year to make & in my opinion it's one of the better produced albums. For the time, I believe that it was up there and it has a smooth sounds with different styles of songs from Hotel California, to New Kid in Town and to the epic, Last Resort.

Maybe I'm I'm bias as they are my favourite band...

Here's One...

I don't recall off-hand who produced it ... But Blues Traveller's 'Four' is damned near perfect if you ask me. :p

In a very different league but equally well produced was 16 Volt's 'Supercoolnothing'. I HIGHLY recommend it, for the production values as well as being an AMAZING album (one of my very favourite). http://www.16volt.com

I get a kick out of that guy saying anything released by a corporate label is crap. That's completely ridiculous. Duh, IMHO.

progress by the rxbandits is an extremely well-produced album. it flows together beautifully, the channel splitting is tastefully done and importance in melodies and rhythms are brought to the forefront in a commendable manner.

rxbandits are awesome, but they sound just as awesome on the CD as they do live, so I don't agree that there was that much production done to that cd.

chris fudurich is awesome. (produced rx bandits) production is not as much a physical sound thing as it is a getting the best performance out of an artist thing, and/or helping to develop songs.

So in fairness I disagree with you. I was there a few times when rxb was recording (as I mentioned, the main guitar you're hearing on it is, my 79' les paul) and I disagree with you. He had a lot of input and I don't think it would have been as good with a diff producer. Now not to say that the band didn't have anything to do with it. It's clearly a joint effort as it should be. I think I am building a protools rig for matt soon....I'd like to see some stuff that he produces.

Allister just started their full length on monday with chris as well. I think I'm going down there in a few days.

Its all about music, and taste, and everyone is different.

Here are mine:

Nicole Renee - the only album she's ever done, outstanding.
Zap Mama - A Ma Zone - If you want to hear good tracking, superb vocal, bass and drum sound, superb mixing and mastering, that's the one to listen to.

Ditto on Martin's production job on sgt. pepper, although Todd Rundgren has always shown a knack for producing acts. Check out his job on Bat out of hell. (whether you like it or not) awesome job.

I'll go for:

Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon
Beatles-Abbey Road
Talk Talk-Laughing Stock
Latin Playboys-Dose
PJ Harvey-To Bring you my Love
SwerveDriver-Mescal HEad
Meshuggah-Chaosphere, Destroy, Erase, Improve
2nd Mr Bungle Album
