Every production made by David Foster. This man even made a beautifull daughter (she's a model a believe.) Everything this man touches seems to become gold.......

And don't forget Sting's 'seven days'......unbelievable production.

Eurythmics,

I'm going to second you on your TOTO posting. Again, I'm not much of a fan of 80s music or Toto's in general, but back in the early 90s when CDs were really becoming popular and I was starting my commercial studio, someone gave me a Toto CD and told me to listen to the production and engineering. I was very, very surprised and impressed and how well that, and future Toto albums were recordered, engineered and produced. For those clients who are interested in the engineering process, I will pull out a Toto CD and tell them to listen to each instrument. They almost always agree. Their songs are very diverse, yet every one is very well done. I particularly like what they did with "Africa".

I've always thought that Rage Against the Machine's first album sounded great. They are a great live band, but the mix seems pretty awesome (I think it was mixed by Andy Wallace). Also, the Refused album "the shape of punk to come" doesn't have a hiFi sound, but I think the production is very good.

2 stand out to me:

the 2 Huey Lewis tracks from the 'Back to the Future' soundtrack

"Raoul and the Kings of Spain"-Tears For Fears

I am too tired to justify or explain my choices at this time.

Oh, you're so right! I've never really thought about Huey Lewis/The News from a production standpoint, but you're right, that stuff sounds great. And I feel bad for not mentioning Tears For Fears; they're one of my favorite groups. I have three of the four albums (missing Big Chair) along with the hits compilation, and their stuff sounds amazing.

What in your opinion is the best produced record you can think of. This is kind of a subjective question since some would say an album that sounds like it is very live is best, while others like that "over produced" sound.

Personally I think the best produced album is Orgy's "Vapor Transmission"(I know, corny name...)
It was produced by Josh Abraham who also does quite a bit in the way of actually recording with the band.

anyway, what do you all think,.

I got that album form the States. It is very badl;y produced. Candyass was much better. The guitars are soo low they are muddy and undefined. The vocals are over-chorused. There should ahve been more panning of various elements. Everything is straight down the middle. I loved Orgy's first album but that is one they will want to forget!

Oh the about series of excellent DVD s are also available for many fo the albums you guys mentioned! INcluding Dark Side of the Moon, Quadrephenia etc

My favourite producer is Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. He is so far ahead of his time it is amazing a true visionary. He pioneered things that are only just coming into fashion now way back on his first full album - Pretty Hate Machine e.g. distorting drums, recording guiatr and then putting the recoreded guitars into smapler to make them sound more artificial etc. I could recommend any NIN album to blwo you away production wise - The Fragile si the one that will appeal to the wider audience but The Downward Spiral or Broken is his best work I think.

Metallica's "Metallica" aka "The Black Album" - no contest. Amazingly produced. Sounds huge. Best drum sound and guitar mix ever. I highyl recommend a DVD that just came out all about making that album callled "Classic Album's Metallica's The Black Album". INterestign interviews and they talk about hwo it was recorded, techniques, and go back to have a look at the master tracks. There are guitars etc in there you never even would realise were int he mix at all!

There isn't one for Quadrophenia, but there is one for Who's Next. I bought it - it's quite good.

The Posies - Amazing Disgrace

those guitarsounds and bass sounds are just amazing.
have a listen...i discover new things every time

best prodution

progress by the rxbandits is an extremely well-produced album. it flows together beautifully, the channel splitting is tastefully done and importance in melodies and rhythms are brought to the forefront in a commendable manner.

Ah I feel I should also recommend a newer artist VAST. Their debut album Video Audio Sensory Theatre was just mindblowing.

To me the best-produced album is and always will be Abbey Road. The clarity of the instruments, how they work together... man. Side Two should be required listening for anyone interested in pop music.

And I must disagree with the comment on the first page slamming Strawberry Fields' production. For its time, it was as fresh and surprising as anything. You all probably know this story: John tried it as a rock quartet arrangement, then a strings/keyboard arrangement in a different key and tempo, then ordered George Martin to put them together. And..... somehow the different tempi and keys made it work! And Martin's string arrangements in and of themselves merit praise. (for even wilder strings, listen to Harrison's Within You Without You from Sgt. Pepper).

Fab4ever,

I think that comment was more in relation to the fidelity of the sound, than what was accomplished and what boundaries were stretched. You might like to check out the "Antares Mic Modeler" thread that's currently going on - the Beatles are being discussed rather heavily, and I'm sure your input would be appreciated.

Abby Rd.I think that was a Phil Spector production and not really a complete George Martin job on that one..Not really sure though!I think that the Beatles/Martin are the foundation for modern rock/pop...When you can have a band like Oasis ect. still sell and have hits with such a heavey influence..it goes to show how great they were.Tears for Fears were a pretty good 80s pop rock band and there is a strong Beatles infl.I would imagine the Radio Head has some Beatles infl.also...

Other than a nod to baby Michael Jackson, man, you're definitely going to get no argument from me there. :)

Im a fan of Bob Rock.

His stuff with the Cult is amazing. I love the sounds.

The Cults "Electric" is great...Wildfower..I used to do that one live when we would slip in a cover..Thats the kind of rock that could come back..Raw nasty energy..love it

I do believe that was me who made the comment about Strawberry Fields..

Yeah songwriting and arranging... It's the better one....

But in the interest of fidelity and production and overall fullness of sound.... What was going on on the west coast in LA at the time was much better..... ie: the Doors "Touch me"..
