OK, my birthday (feb 22) is comin up and my band (BlanKinK, we will prolly start postin songs on the internet in the middle of march) has finished the writing of our 1st album. My parents say that if my band can keep the total cost of a recording/mixing setup under 300 they will buy it for me. When i say a setup, i mean everything a recorder, a mixer (i don't care if its a machine a a computermixer) and a microphone. All we really want out of a mixer is somthin that can improive sound wuality. effcts and stuff don't matter much AT ALL. basically we wanna give it that fuller, clearer sound you hear on cds as opposed to live.

our music is similar to chevelle's, taproot's, and sorta disturbed. Basically we re new metal band. if anyone could give me some suggestions as to what to buy, i would be SO thankful. oh, and we need sumthin that cn record 2 guitars, bass, drums, and vocals. not sure if that matters or not but...

alright thanks a TON

by the way--i am tired so sorry if i repeated the same thing over and over again in different ways. plus i am new to this site/reording, i am not sure where to post what, so sorry if this in the wrong area

your best bet is :

Shure sm57 microphone
Marshall MXLv67G microphone
Delta Audiophile 2496 soundcard
Delta AudioBuddy preamp
N-Track software

total cost ~ $400

this is assuming you have the PC to run it on.......this is about the bare minimum you can do it with starting from scratch........

You do realize that CDs are generally recorded on budgets a little larger than $300. :D

The Gidgemeister isn't steering you wrong with that setup, though. It should be enough to get you at least up and running, and you might even make a decent quality recording or two with it. I'd probably substitute the sm57/v67 combo for one very versatile, mostly-neutral condenser. If you can get a deal on an Audio Technica 4033 off ebay, I'd jump on it. Otherwise, a Studio Projects B1 and/or a CAD m37 (if they're still being made). :D

I've never done this before, but....Blank, stop the cross-posting insanity. I think this thread is in every forum...

lol, that what you said about "you just wanting that clearer fuller sound like cd's have" sould be in your sig or somthing, I think that is the funiest thing I have ever read (I am just messing with ya;) But seriosuly, alot of us on here, STRIVE and pay out the YingYang to get that "CD" sound.

Jeez $300 bones eh?

SM57 is a MUST (I would check ebay)
The Marshall MXLv67G is freaking awesome for the price.
I would also go with the Audiophile soundcard, and the audio buddy preamp. Then just use N-Track. And prepare for the headaches. Just dont expect to get "that CD sound" your first time out.

arite, srry blackburn and any1 else i ticked off, i've never rly done crap like that b4, it pisses me off when other ppl do it but in this one case i think it might be worth pissin a few ppl off to avoid doin extra chores for 2 years, so i can buy sumthin as cheap as what i might be able to get for free in 5 days

o yeh, and thanks to everyone that's posted a reply this is helpin out quite a bit

worth waiting for?????

say, my dad is wunna those big fancy shmancy old suit wearin business folk. he's had a huge paycheck for a long long time, but right now he's outta work. now that's why i have such a slim budget. my budget would still be pretty slim, but better (maybe 4, 5 hundred). also, the chances of me gettin a whole setup for my birthday ar my pop will have enough mony to get me a nicer setup. so is this small budget increase worth the long wait+ decreasing the chances of me gettin anything?

also, if we ait a while we might jus get luck: our rhythym guitarist's dad used to be a pro musician and has alotta connections with digital media folk. So we might jus get lucky (he jus got a $1000 film editting dealy for free) and get a used piece of equipment or 2, but definitely not a whole setup

k thx alot

That's a good thing.

he's had a huge paycheck for a long long time, but right now he's outta work.

That's not a good thing.

so is this small budget increase worth the long wait+ decreasing the chances of me gettin anything?

Not exactly. You see, as time wears on, assuming he still doesn't have a job, money has a way of getting even tighter. Best get whatever you can out of him right now. :D

our rhythym guitarist's dad used to be a pro musician

And what does he think about all of this?

this is what i did:

didnt eat lunch for a few monthes bought a mixer (recorder through comp)

got a job
bought a digital 4 track some 57's , parts to make some nice cablesand a bunch of boom stands

what you should do it get some cmmen acessories, like have one guitarist get a pop filter, someone else get some cables, somne one else get other cables, someone get a mic, stuff like that, it is a band.

wait a minute

so you are planning on recording your band for the first time, and yet you have no plans to buy something really expensive from Guitar Center, and return it when your record is done?

don't all bands start like this?

and speaking of borrowing stuff from Guitar Center, you dont have any local friends to borrow stuff from?
