Since you have most likely not used the brand that I recommended, then you have no basis for calling it crap. Fair enough?

Fair enough...Im sorry for calling your speakers crap, but have you ever used any other monitor? Im guessing no...

people come here to get advice....sometimes its not what they want to hear, but in the long run, might be the most effective advice...but who is to say because no matter what you choose to do, 99% of the time you will say damn....I wish I had done this instead....

I am offering advice from my experiances of using several popular brands of speakers ranging from $300 a pair to around $1100 a pair. There is a wide range there and there are a lot of speakers to be talked about....and I will happily talk about the ones Iv used....but with all due respect, when someone has only used one set of speakers....and swears by that one set....well....you see what Im getting at....

You assume way too much. I have worked in several PRO studios and used a ton of PRO gear....and by PRO I don't mean Behringer Pro series stuff. But this is HOME recording. Seeing that I have indeed worked on high end equipment, I feel that I am qualified to give a small amount of advice on what works for me at home on a budget. Sure, my speakers don't compare to a nice set of NS10's or that ilk, however, For under $100, they do a damned good job. They do what they are supposed to do. They let me monitor my mixes without coloring the sound. They also allow me to spend my hard earned money on doing things like feeding my family.

Sorry, Thajeremy, but Thunder33 has you on this one. and yes, you do assume WAY too much.

Oh, I'm sure they do compare to a pair of NS10s - favourably. NS10s are okay as a second opinion alongside proper monitors. I'm sure your speakers are at least as good as the NS10.

Sometimes the advice a person needs to hear is not the advice they are asking for. So the suggestion to save up more money for a better set of monitors is very legitimate in my opinion.

Since that person has already gone through the upgrade phenomenon himself, the advice offered is based on personal experience as well. Unlike much advice you read on boards like this, which is people talking about gear they haven't used or even heard.

In addition, one does have to be familiar with better monitors to know the difference between them and the sub $150 models. If all you use is ultra cheapy monitors, it is natural that you will think they are just fine. It's not until your ears become accustomed to hearing the finer details that better monitors offer that you'll hear the flaws in the ultra low end monitors.

Not dissin' anybody, just talking monitors...

i agree with SA...
it takes some time, an never ending at times..time will tell.
but if we haven't tried the good stuff there's nothing to compare to.
and longer listens than a 10minute Guitar CenterMart test...

it can get to a point where, the more expensive stuff doesn't offer enough shizzle for the extra $$$$$...then I'd suspect its something else, like the room holding things back, weakest link.

as I type I realize many pro's use pretty average stuff too. What I consider average stuff which is anything sold in Guitar Center. non boutique stuff.

for subprice @ $150, there's a nice pair of the older BX5's for $99 asking price used...so they'd probably take $70. These are decent within this price range. Used....add a sub later for $50. I bought a frkn nice JBL sub for around that. mint.

I saw a pair of HR824's for $300 yesterday on craigslist...cash is King in a economy meltdown.

see, that leads to a great point. If you get some good cheap monitors, then when you get higher quality monitors, you have a second set to get a different point of view. Ideally, you should have several different quality speakers to listen to your mix on.

Enjoy

This is a really good point.

I use Mackie HR824's along with KRK V4's. Very happy with that combination, and it is important to have at least a couple different sets of monitors to check mixes on.
