Best monitors approx $1000.00 to $1500.00

Looking at upgrading my monitor setup. Currently have BX8's (no A).

Have health issues fo I can't get out that much. Wanted to get some peoples take on these. I will say I like to get thumped in the chest when I am mixing, but I want it tight & clear. So sufficiant tight low end is a must for me.

An option I've considered is KRK V8II's with a RP10s?




Let me know your oppinions.

I haven't used any of them, but the ADAM A7's are about $1000, and would definitely be one to add to your list. They have received much praise on the gearslutz board.

I've heard both ways on the A7's. Alot of people say the name carries a big price tag that they don't live up to, but I have not heard them either.
I will take them into consideration.

Have read both good and not so good about the Adam 7s. I know Bluebear uses the higher end Adams and they are very good.

I'm using the Events SP8s currently and they work fine. However, IMO, sometimes the 8" woofers can produce a slightly "boomy" sound on the lows but that usually depends on input/mixing/settings.

It would probably be worth your while and wallet to visit a vendor and listen to the major players on your selection card.

Or, if you have a good relationship with a Vendor, you could ask them to send you two sets of monitors and you can select whatever your ears like; however, you would most likely be stuck with the shipping-back charges and they are considerable these days. I think a drive to the nearest major vendor might be a better way. Or, you could visit a junior college or a college and check out what is in use with their jazz bands/groups.

I recently donated my "very new" Roland KC-500 to my alma mater and got the tax credit. They already had one but really needed another keyboard amp/mixer as they have several small groups doing gigs and performances. You might keep that "donation" idea in mind when you replace gear and have extra gear. The school will "pick" up your gear and send you a letter confirming the donation.

Well, I've drifted a bit but I've got to believe when you are going to drop a bunch of pezzutors you are aware of the product's performance.

I have been really swaying tward the ASP8's at least in my mind Haven't heard them yet, but I like the design with the front ports. Read some reviews in Mix and other places. I don't mind the speakers getting boomy at all if I deserve it I am looking for something that has can represent cruddy low end well. That is, I want something that will give me accurate low end good and bad. I also like alot of thump & feel when mixing. Helps me to not overly darken my hi's and also not to have a mix that's got too much low end in the outside world.

What I don't want is something that sounds like hell on the low end when I throw in a cd that has alot of good sounding lows on virtually all other systems. take tool for example.

Are the V8's still available new or do you have to get series 2? I got the impression version 2 replaces regular v8's, but I am not sure of the pros and cons of each or what was changed.

Well, I bought my v8's used from a studio. I looked at the series 2 but really did not see that much of a difference (except price!). I like them, and they have a great sound

FS, Are you aware that there is 2 models of the BM5A right? One is "compact" and the other is the real deal. Banjo center carries the compact model from what I hear.

The better BM5a goes down lower in freq, so that should be a consideration.

I can't remmeber the diff BM5a vs A7's , but I'm supposing thaat the mids and HF would probably be better on the Adams A7's. Theres a rather good posting over @ GS, but naturally people more or less support their purchase more, but some good reviews are avaiable-if you know that gang over there.

I personally haven't heard either, but as the usual verbiage goes, be sure to listen to them first. At the moment, I'm considering the BM6a vs BM5a/A7's. But that is a big jump in the cash-ola department, and not sure if I can jump to the BM6a's, due to wanting fill out the pre amps needs.

They are incredibly balanced and their translation is very high, in other words, when the mix is done, it's done. The frequency spectrum is clear from the lows to the highs which can't be said for most of the others. The only brand I tested that were better, the JBL 6300 series, but they were $1000 more than the Events.

Cool! Ya if all the reviews I have read are true thats probly where I will end up. The Mackies are the second runner up in my mind because of the low end but the forward hi's are not what I need. baring the ASP8's and the HR824's I don't think there's anything in this price range where I would't also want a sub. I would rather not have to use a sub if I can get away with it. I also like the front porting with my room.

Cool. I just want speakers that make me a little less shy of the top end and a little more shy of the lows than what I have (in the mix that is) tired of taking mixes out of the studio and having to bring them back in because the bass is a bit out of control or the hi's don't quite shine like they should.

The bx8's are pretty bassy but alot of it is comming off the walls because of the porting and the hi's can be a little harsher than in reality from what I've seen and I hate harsh.

someone on gearslutz is slinging a pair of genelec 1031a's for $950/pair...if i had $1000 for some monitors, i'd be looking HARD at that deal
