it IS all about learning the speakers. and yeah, after you've been mixing for a while it's common practice to slap an HPF on everything that doesn't need anything below 200 or so.

it just goes to show that we can "make do" with low-end "home recording" level gear.......but when we move up to "pro level" gear, the differences between it and the "prosumer" stuff are stark and immediate.

that's not to say that one can't get great results with low end gear......it's that the higher-end gear just gets you a lot closer a whole lot easier.

Well I don't quite hit 200hz on the hi pass. I do start to get close though on toms once in a while ;)

Check this thread out. https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=231381

Mix B is a rework of mix A after I got the ASP8's
It's not from scratch but the asp8's prompted me to make the changes. Before I thought I had the mix as good as I was going to get it.

F.S.

well, i threw out the 200 number there for kicks and grins. certainly it depends on the mix, etc.....but often i have no qualms about starting a rolloff around 200 on vocals, guitars, toms, anything that has no meaningful information down there. but often that rolloff won't have any real effect til it hits 100, etc. anyway, you know what i mean. :D

i'll grab those mp3s and check em out tonight when i've got access to something other than a pair of crappy PC speakers. of course, i've read the thread and it seems that it's a pretty resounding result. often upgrades like this are seen when adding up all the various little improvements.

meaning, mix b might not be heads and shoulders better than mix a.....but when you track the next song, you'll be better equipped to spot the troublepoints before they're committed to tape--and therefore your sounds when tracking will be that much better....which translates into considerably better mixes. i'm a big fan of "fix it in the tracking" and "track it like you mean it'. :D :p
