Best cable to go from Art Preamp to Audiophile 2496 card

Hey everyone,
I am into voice overs.
I have a MXL 990 mic going into an ART Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp. What is the best cable to get to go into the Audiophile 2496 card?
I bought everything but have no cables.

I believe I need an XLR cable from Mic to preamp and a cable from preamp to the card. Cable from preamp to sound card?

Please help.

Thew audiophile has RCA inputs from what I understand, which are unbalenced. This means you will need to run cable from the 1/4 outputs of your preamp.

Mono Instrument cable would be ok (guitar cable, for example) - you'll just need a 1/4" to RCA adaptor to plug it into the audiophile card. The shorter the cable run the better, ideally.

Rule no1 of home recording - NEVER use the built in sound card that came with your PC. It will be of very poor quality.

Are you sure you need an internal sound card? There are a lot of firewire and USB cards around. The audiophile hasn't got anything that special about it, although it is a good bit of kit.

I don't need an internal sound card as such just something to hook the pre amped mic up to the PC. As I'm a newbie I got no idea. I realise I need to upgrade from the on board sound. I have no idea what is a good interface to get for my setup. All I want to do is record Podcasts and do some voice over work. So what is that bit of hardware I need to get a good sound into the PC. The PC is powerful, brand new just built. An just need to record voice.

Any recommendations?

If all you need is a line in - there are a lot of options. I use a lexicon alpha because its dirt cheap and does a reasonable job. I also like it because its USB bus powered.

There are a few things you should consider:

Do you want it to be powered from the USB port alone?
Do you need phantom power (for connecting condensor and some DI boxes)?
How many channels do you need?
Do you need to monitor via hardware (the monitor signal doesn't pass through the PC)?
Do you need any software?

If all your after is a line in, you can get a pretty cheap device to do the job, but make sure you aren't limiting yourself before you do so

Powered from the USB port would be good.
Don't need phantom power, have that with the ART Preamp.
1 Channel is fine. I'm just recording voice.
Don't need to monitor via hardware.

The lexicon alpha as you suggested looks perfect for what I need. I looked at the line 6 UX1 and UX2 but they seem out of my price range. Also the comments on them were quite negative.

Will look around for a lexicon alpha.
