Beringer B-2 microphone

I am interested in knowing who is using the Beringer B-2 condenser microphone. The reason is that I would like to get one and see how it can be modded for better performance.

I would also like to know:
Whats its down side?
Is it a true condenser mic?

Because its so cheap it wont be sacrilege to rip it apart to poke around.

What do you think?

It is a True large diaphram condenser mic and sounds okay but it has a pretty brittle high end and not a very pronounced low end so you will probably have to EQ it for best results .....

About the only thing you'd be able to do with it is upgrade the capacitors, maybe replace the transducer (capsule). The capsule is a 797 copy of a K67 Neumann, which is used in the U67 and U87, but the diaphragm is 3 microns thin instead of the 6 microns used by Neumann.

Capsule upgrade...?! Mmm... and better semi-conductors? I got some NOS SK170 fets kicking around.
 
You could change out the protective head basket as well. ;)

Is the stock device bad?

I looked at the B-2 in a shop a while back and thought it is very sturdy and the hard carry case is a big +.

It's just a mod that most modders do. Strip it down to a single layered head basket or refit a new one.

The only thing I think changing the FET would benefit is noise, and I believe there's some dissent on that based on the circuit. I also believe the SK170 is what's in there already.

The capacitors will have the biggest effect on sound outside of any mechanical alterations. Better film capacitors helps reduce non linear distortions to the signal. Get rid of any electrolytic or ceramics that you find that can fit in the space you have.

There's also disagreement on whether changing the grill is good or bad. Both Neumann and AKG selected the grill material (wire mesh) not just to shield the capsule, but also to control standing waves and frequency response. The spacing of the mesh, plus the size and mesh count all have an effect on frequency response and can cut or boost certain frequencies. On the U47 the grill had an effect of boosting the upper spectrum in such a way as to add a presence peak, cutting at the 5k region, then boosting again towards 8-10k, which naturally adds the EQ that is perfect for most voices.

The Ela M 250/251 grill had an effect that softened some of the mid and upper frequencies that helped give it a smooth sound that was a little friendlier to vocals than the AKG C12. Those mics share a lot in common, but still have different voices because of their construction.
