Hi all, I've been shopping around for an interface for my drums and possibly other instruments. I have a 5 piece drum mic kit, so was thinking I would have to get an 8 mic input mixer like the Zoom R16.

These cost £250-300 minimum but my budget is £200 (though obviously I want to spend as little as possible). If anyone knows of anywhere I can get the Zoom for that price let me know!

I've since discovered Behringer mixers, however, with 5, 6, or 8 mic inputs, which should suit me fine.

The XENYX 1002B is by far the cheapest. I'd like to know if that can actually accomodate my 5 mics though - it looks like it can but says it only has 2 preamps (very noobish question I know, but all the jargon is a nightmare to get my head around.

The other 3 options seem to be the XENYX X1832USB, the XENYX X1222USB and the XENYX X2222USB - though I think a couple of those might have the same problems mentioned above.

If anyone could give me any advice on which (if any) of these is most suited to me needs, and best value for money, I'd be very grateful. I don't trust myself to make the right decision!

Thank you!

Check out the Tascam 1641. It's a lot cheaper than the Zoom R16 and has pretty good entry-level quality.

ok thanks a lot, that seems like it could be feasible.

I've found the Tascam 1641 and Behringer ADA8000 look pretty similar - which leads me to another question: would you recommend getting a mixer over a simple interface with preamps? It looks like for an extra £30 or so I can get a reasonably sized mixing desk, but is this worth it if I plan to mainly use a computer DAW for mixing?

The Behringer ADA 8000 only has adat in's/out's so you'd have to have a soundcard that supports it. If you do I'm selling one for $150.00.......

Yeah I see that now, I need something to plug directly into my laptop so I guess that's out of the equation. Thanks for the offer though.

I think it's now down to the Tascam 1641, the XENYX X1832USB, the XENYX 1002B and the XENYX X1222USB - though I'm still uncertain if those last 2 will record my 5 mics or not...

Thanks for the advice, just ordered the tascam for £199 including postage. Time will tell if that's a good deal...
