bass tones from a 6 string

Since I am lazy, I don't want to learn bass guitar technique and prefer to try getting bass tones out of a six string guitar (not a six string bass guitar). I have an inexpensive Peavey bass guitar, but - what LOOKS easy is - alas - not.

I see there are a lot of pitch shifting and octave boxes on the market - but from what I can see - they introduce multiple octave tones - not just a straight 1 or 2 octave drop, stand alone tone, by itself.

Does anybody have any endorsements for any such product? Otherwise - I'm taking a stab in the dark. Which means I'll likely end up with more equipment that I don't really want/need/use. Which makes my wife angry. Which affects my sex life. Which leads to toxic sperm buildup. Which is life threatening.

So - help a brother out and save my life!

The most popular octave box that I know of is the Boss OC-2. It has volume knobs for 1 octave below, 2 octaves below and the origional signal, meaning you can dial in just the one octave down signal by turning the other knobs fully counter clockwise. Note that even though this will give you the notes you want in the bass region, it's far from a bass guitar. The sound is not the same and the articulation is really not the same.
 
What's not 'easy' about playing bass, contrasted with playing a guitar? So, you're willing to learn bass techniques on a guitar, and let your bass collect dust. Maybe I'm missing your point.

And David, I always thought (hoped?) - before I ever picked one up - that playing bass would have the same feel as playing bass patterns on a 6 string guitar.

What I quickly found out was - for me - the length of the neck, the increased distance between frets, and the subtleties in getting a decent tone out of the plucked/picked string was all new and constituted maybe the first cousin of playing bass patterns on a six string - but definitely not its twin brother.

Like I said - I'm lazy and didn't want to take the time to learn technique and build up speed.

I'll see if I can find a Boss OC-2 on e-bay.
 
It won't sound like a bass, they are nice for solos and effects, but they lack punch and a fat bottom (yeah I know Chess, heh heh I said bottom)
 
Is this for recording (I hope)? Just use the pitch shift in your DAW. It will still sound like ass, but it won't cost any money.
 
it is indeed for recording - but all I have is a Fostex MR-8 :o

So I don't have the capability to shift pitch without another piece of equipment.

I just want to add a little bottom [heh, heh] to my acoustic rhythm experiments.
