Bass Guitar for the non-Bass Player

This topic comes up a lot....and the gsr-200 is always mentioned. It's cheap, it actually sounds decent, it's got a slender neck that's easy for guitarists to transition too.

I bought one used and it has some fret buzz, but I haven't experienced that in the new ones I played down at Guitar Center. I don't know whether mine came like that new, or if it developed the buzz over time. My point is to try before you buy, & make sure the one you get doesn't buzz.
 
Just wanted to update this thread. I ended up purchasing the Yamaha 170 from a local store. It felt really good to play and had little to no buzz problems. I've always had a dilemma with purchasing local: I can 9 out of 10 times get a better deal online, but love to support local business and like to try things out in store. It was a struggle for the dealer to knock $5 off this item today - in end, I could have saved $10 from MF or wherever online, but instead I have it in hand now. For me, $10 wasn't a big sacrifice so I can now feel better about hanging out in the local stores (since I've actually purchased something bigger than a pack of strings).

Well, for 95% of your listener's ears, they won't know any difference on a recorded/processed track.
 
I am in the same position and am considering an Ibanez bass as I have heard nothing but good things about them and for the money its hard to beat.

Read up a few posts... I went with the Yamaha. :D So far, so good.
 
ibanez and yamaha low end guitars are good for the money.... i would steer clear of shortscale because for recording the string definition is all important.
