Cool song, and nice guitar tone....I'd like to hear the bass a bit more...might fill the tune out some. Maybe lower the main guitar a few db, then bring the whole song up that much?

I hear the bass, just seems to be sitting too low right now...and then the drums might need a slight boost in the mix also.

Thanks FS, Nakatira, Dogman :)
The only thing that stood out to me as that it might need some manual tweeks or a little mor compression on the vox to fix some quiet parts at the beginings of a few words here and there.
F.S.
I've played with some automation so I'll look into that for vocals. The Cakewalk compressor tends to sound (to me) rather harsh, although I'm still working on it.

Sounds good to me Ido, great vocal sound, crisp and clear. Well sung.
Rode NTK - still one of my favorite Xmas presents...

Okay I'll play around with that some more - I think it's mainly eq on the bass and volume on the drums.

Gonna be a minor delay on that; I have a houseguest sleeping in my studio till Saturday, and a paid hired gun gig in line before this, so I fugre it'll be Sunday when I can record this...

Sounds good! :D

If you are using Cakewalk and not sonar with the vc64 I would have to say that at the very least the cw compressor is difficult to work with.

Good luck!

OK, here it is!!

Here's a new song that I've been working on. Let me know what you think of the mix.... :D

It's called Back In My Arms and the links are below:

A little before and after action, finally. Man, it's nice to have the studio back! This is with my live drums, and remixed. Gerry, the vocal track was more than a little distorted and VERY noise gated... it was unfortuantely a little difficult to minimize in a couple places... Hope you like the mix and the drums; I'm not a rocker per se; so it sort of has a late-80s pop/rock sensibility now, I think...

Gerry, feel free to chuck this up on your Soundclick page if you like, it's a 192k; should be clean enough...

For you drummers in the crowd, I'm doing my Billy Gibson impression here... :D:D

Cheers,
Phil

Cool, Phil. I find the drums, and maybe the whole mix a little dark. But, like you said, it has that 80's "snare-sounds-like-a-tom" thing going on. You manged to smooth out the vocals, too, which is nice, though it might have taken away the little bit of edge this song had. I find this song could have used more, not less, edge to it. You should have put his voice through a distortion pedal. :D

Good job on the drums, bruthah.

I considered putting it through a flange, truth be told. :) You really though it was dark? Hmm, I was finiding it really sibilant and that I had to reel in what I was doing. Maybe I'm turing into an old fart... :D :D :D

That said, my snare is very dark anyway, I'm trying to find edge in it. You'd think it'd be easy, as it's chrome, but if I don't rein it in with dampening, it has this horrible overtone ringout thing that you just can't control...

Chrome...wood...latex...formica. Whatever.:D

I just find it's tuned low. It's not bad by any means. I thought you were going for that sort of Springsteen tom/snare sound, and you got it. :)

Boy, I wish you lived closer than 1700 miles away, I'd love for you to come show me how to get sound out of this thing. I have one of those tension meters, and the thing's cranked up to like 90 whatevers on each lug...

Fabulous Phil...Drums are excellent and make this sound so much more "alive". I agree it's darker than my original mix, but you've brought the whole mix together better than I could. Vocals are much more level, bass is really thumping (Mike should like that). I will definitely post this on Soundclick. Thanks for adding drums and really bringing this to another level! This is really cool!:cool::cool::cool:

Anytime, buddy... 'Twas a good exercise for me, and it's helping me slowly dial in my drum sound, and get more experience mixing rock and roll...

Hey Ido...sounds nice mate...very bittersweet kind of vibe.

Hey Gerry. Awesome song, just got done listening to the version with the live drums. How very cool hearing one of your songs with live drums. Vocals are awesome as usual. Drum mix on the one Phil did is really nice. Bass is thumping. No complaints at all. Wonderful song, thanks for sharing.

Take care

Gary

OK, so I got this in the car this morning and now I see what everyone means by dark. PEE-YEW, do I need to remaster this... Sorry!! My monitors must be high-biased, I'm pumping too much bottom in...

I've always wanted to have a studio big enough to actually have a car in there.:p

Thanks Gary - the drums add a whole new dimension to the song don't they?

Just a trim please, a little off the sides - I kinda like the big bottom end.

My truck is not the greatest point of reference. It tends to lack bass response a bit. I like my monitors better ;)

I'll leave the big bottom, but it needs edge on the sideburns.

Rami, for some reason, my car is the most linear of my sources; I catch more mistakes there than ANYWHERE else. NO idea why. It's a Nissan Altima, the base stereo.

Definitely shifted the spotlight... :)

I'll agree, i think it's got too much low end. I really like what you did with the vocals. Did you add some dirt to the guitars, too?? Live drums are great on Gerry's songs. You guys should do this more often. Sounds good.

Tons of watts going into a dead space. Plus, it's a very familiar listening environment.

Cheers,

Very well ido!
If I were you I would consider spicing some parts up by punching in couple of notes with your solo guitar.
It seems that your two rhythm guitars play for a minutes without any new things happening.
Your solo is perfect;
I would just like to hear that guitar in couple other parts as well.
Just a little bit. Do not exaggerate!
The song is beautiful.
keep it posting!

OK, here's mix 2.0

Changes:
- Overheads hotter
- Kick emphasis moved from 64Hz to 80Hz.
- Under snare mic hotter, has some 'verb now
- Top snare mic a smidge hotter, but some low end pulled out
- Vocals run through mild (30ms down the left) stereo delay, a tad hotter
- Master stereo mix rolled off at 31hz a bit, pumped at 6.3KHz a smidge for clarity.
- Bass guitar upper mids that had been pulled got rolled back in a bit
- Right side guitar has edgier EQ curve
- Lead guitar has a smidge of delay
