I'm presently using mackie VLZpro with a Rode NT-3 and SM57. My primary uses are vocals and acoustic guitar but I'd like something that will sound decent for recording a bluegrass band's practice sessions.

My budget is small. From the great responses I got in another thread, I'm thinking of an AT3035 (or Cad M179), or possibly an SP B-1 along with a VTB-1 pre-amp. I'd like a 4033 but it's beyond my budget right now, maybe later.

So, which would be the bigger bang for buck, 3035 or B1/VTB-1 combo?

Thanks,
Bill

I've used the B1 on acoustic guitar and I think it sounds great. I've got a little Shure Pg81 Small Diaphram Condensor that I think sounds even better, but no one seems to talk about this mic.

The B1 also sounds great on vocals, although I'm learning that I like an Sm57 or 58 on my voice better than the budget Large Diaphram Condensors (like the B1) that I've tried. My voice is kind of nasally though. :)

I recommend the B1. Its a great mic for the price. I have no experience with the AT3035, but hope to learn about it on this thread.

I have the B1 and AT3035, I use them for vocals and acoustic guitar and am happy with both, however I just picked up second used AT3035 for $4 more than I paid for the B1, at that price I would definitely choose the Audio Technica. The AT3035 has a low cut and a pad and will probably retain it's value better than the B1.

As for recording blues grass practice, the room will probably have a far greater impact than the choice of mic

cad m179, $139 and up on ebay

Is the CAD M177 the same as the M179 except for the cardiod only pattern?

Thanks,

I use a Studio Projects B1 and an M-Audio Tampa Pre. I record mainly Acoustic guitar and vocals and I love the combination. I have a few songs I've recorded HERE using both called PENNY and STAR, Just an acoustic and a vocal on each tracked seperately with the B1 through the TAMPA.

IMHO the compressor on the TAMPA is worth twice the price of the whole unit, very nice sounding Pre too. Hope this helps as a guide with your decision.

I just got the VTB-1 but haven't tried it with my AT3035. I'm liking the AT3035 on vocals, but I'm curious about it on acoustic gtr. Any experience with the AT3035 + VTB-1 on acoustic guitar?

The CAD will work great on practice sessions as you could set it on omni and put the banjo player in Cleveland. Recently acquired a C3 and THAT mic would be the baby for ya , I don't think I'll be jonesin' for another mic for a little while anyway.

Beautiful work, Alec--writing, guitars, voice on Penny are wonderful. I'm getting the same good recording results with my SP B1s--I'm in the process of posting some of my own pieces (in a much different style) online for anyone interested.

Thanks for sharing~

If you're going to record bluegrass priactice sessions, you'll need a omni mic, so everyone can stand (or sit) in a circle around the mic. The CAD M179 would be excellent for this, and it's very reasonably priced (under $200 I believe).
