ebay is a good site for microphones..the tlm193 uses the same capsule as the u89, and the tlm103 the same capsule as the u87.

I like the 193 a lot for certain things..

really though..the at4050 is very versatile. the AKG 414 is too..

If you pay full price for the Avalon 737, you're a bit lazy. They list for USD $2295 but you can get them for 1500-1600 if you have a good relationship with a store. I'm sure there is some wiggle room with the M5 as well as any other gear. Don't buy them at retail, or any gear for that matter. It's like paying "sticker Price" for a new car. The 737 give you a lot of options for mic use, but it is colored due to the tube amp circuitry. Does a good job with the U87 and Rode NT2000 and other non-tube LDC mics.

I use an Avalon AD2022, which is basically 2 M-5's in one chassis, and it has served me very, very, well. I'm not as much of a fan of the 737. For tubes, I like Pendulum. For a clean solid state pre with that big iron transformer sound, the Avalon is one of the best. Tons of headroom, damned little noise. Works for me. It is also a kickass bass DI box.-Richie

I did just order a Neumann TLM-103 and a True Systems P-Solo pre-amp to go with it. The P-Solo is single channel, pre-amp, but identical to a few much higher priced versions that have been in use for a few years allready.

I don't know if it was the right choice, we'll see how it performs but having 12 months to pay for it was a factor in the decision.

The Avalon M-5 does look nice and the reviews on the DAV BG1 are all very positive and having a 2-channel of course makes more sense but if the P-Solo does work well with the TLM-103 I'll probably keep it for now.
