I'm sure you guys have heard this before! I'm a newbie
so please be patient with me cuz' I have many, many questions to ask. . . But first lets start with this:

I have an AutoQuad given to me by a friend and of course he doesn't have a manual. I can see that it has a gate feature but I would like to know more about its features as well as ideas on how I can use it in my studio.

Here's a list of my current gear:

Mackie CR-1604
Alesis Ra-100
Event 20/20 Monitors
Temporarily using a Shure 55sh Mic. (Elvis Mic)
PB-40 Patchbay

Alesis Nanoverb
Alesis Quadraverb
Alesis 3630 (Gettin Rid of it Soon!)
AutoCom Pro by Behringer
dbx136x compressor/limiter
AutoQuad by Behringer

Alesis QSR
EMU Proteus2000
Roland JV1010
Roland XP-10
ZOOM SampleTrak ST-224

Philliips CDR-870
Roland VS-840 EX
Cakewalk 3.1 (Simple but it gets the job done.)

and I know, I know, I need to upgrade. . . lol!
But it works just fine!

If it ain't broken!
Why fix it?

I produce a good variety of music (ie.. Trip-Hop,
Techno,Trance,Hip-Hop,POP,Salsa and well who knows!)

I would appreciate your help!

gating...

gates are good for a few things. The main idea is that you can cutoff the track after the volume of that track has dropped below the user set threshold. If you had a kick drum in a studio in a multi mic drumkit. The kick drum isn't making any noise most of the time therefore is a prime candidated for gating. When the kick is silent, the gate cuts the volume to 0 and will open when the kick plays again therefore reducing the sounds of the other drums whilst it's not playing... The speed it opens at, is the Attack and the Release is the time it takes to close. The threshold sets where this all happens. Some have hi and low pass filters too so you can set the bandwidth the gate can hear.

Boring sounding then, though you can do other things with them. Plug a guitar into it and find your threshold. Set the attack on 'very slow' and play a note on the guitar. The gate should open when it hears the guitar string but it will open very slowly due to the attack setting. You should hear the guitar "fading in" like a synth string sound... Experiment...
