I plan on getting my Motif Rack ES, but I want to lean more toward the audio side of things. Thats where I want your opinion. Moderators: If you think there is a better place for this thread, please move it. Because I want to get the most responses to my question.

I know I need to make a vocal booth since I moved. I miss my house with my nice converted closet.

But, I need a good mic-pre and compressor limitor. PLEASE! No DBX Products.
I was thinking about the Focusrite "Platinum Voice Master Pro Channel Strip" and the Focusrite "Platinum Compounder 2 Channel Compressor" .

Am I missing something? Does the channel strip have a compressor limitor in it along with a preamp? Or is it just a Mic pre?

Any suggestions on what I need next? I am just trying to get better quality audio recordings as far as vocals go.

Or anything for that matter.

while i love the MK319, it's not up to par with the rest of your gear.

sm7 -> grace 101 pre would probably be nice, since you mentioned you don't have a vocal booth set up, and im also asssuming you dont have an acoustically sound place to record vox, the dynamic will serve you well in that area.

compressor isnt too important, you can use software ones. mid range price, i would get an RNC or something similar.

yes, a channel strip usually indicates a unit with a preamp and a compressor/limiter and/or eq. ie; avalon 737, LA-610.

its all about how much greenies you wanna throw out there.
 
I'd like to stay in the 500-600 range on a good pre/comp/limiter. I don't mind using a seperate pre and comp. It doesnt have to be an all in one.

After doing a bit of research on the Grace Design 101, and it seems to get great reviewa and the price isn't too bad also.

I think I'm going to set up my vocal booth like I wanted to do last time. I had wanted to put a camera in the booth and the control room with a 7 inch monitor in the booth also and hook up a crt I have so you can see each other. I thought that would be sweet.

Can anyone else thik of anything you might recomend?

I've owned the 166xl, and I don't like how the formant of phonetics sound on vocal tracks. There is always a slight hiss after each word that can not be rid of.

And I traded it in on my XP-30.
 
That 166XL is fvrom their budget pro-sumer line of gear. Don't judge DBX by that, their high end stuff is fantastic.

You need to understand that $500-600 on a pre/compressor combo is the low end of what's available. Don't expect the world from it.

I'd suggest spending $500-700 on the preamp alone. Then budget seperately for the compressor.

As far as pres, the Grace 101 is good. I have a DAV Electronics BG-1 which I am very fond of. A John Hardy M-1 single channel preamp would be an excellent option. I'd stay away from the Focusrite Platinum series.
