audix i5 + emu 0404 no sound

Hello, please help with this problem:
bought on ebay microphone audix i5, included a xlr cable (male-female). Accordingly, I just stick a microphone this cord to my sound card with xlr jack (sound card emu 0404 usb). 48v phantom power light is red (on). But the LED's indicators level does not appear if the "talk" or tap my microphone. No sound at all, tell me what could be the problem? That I could properly cross-connected. How can I check that microphone worker? * it looks a whole and the new...

For starters the Audix i5 does not need phantom to operate so that is not the problem.

I assume that you turned the gain control up?

Do you know anyone with a PA system that you could plug the mic and cable into to test?

Do you have headphones plugged in??
Do you have the gain turned up??
Did you read the manual??

Audix i5 is a dynamic mic, turn the phantom power off.

If you got it from eBay, maybe the seller sold you a bad mic.

Go out and buy a brand new XLR mic cable. If you are remotely serious about recording you need more than one! (you apologized for you English? Seemed fine to me but if you should be in UK, Maplin sell perfectly good mic leads).

If that does not fix things see if you get any kind of click on headphones as you plug and unplug the mic. If not I would suspect the interface, assuming of course you know how to set it up?

I have said this before! Noobs do fine until they hit THE most basic of electrical problems becase they have no test equipment nor any idea how to use it. Buy a modest,$20 digital multimeter IF, as I say, you are serious and want to be doing this long term.

+1. Even the cheapest multimeter (I have one that was on sale at Maplins for five pounds as well as my "good" one) is incredibly useful. You can check phantom power output (though you don't need it this time), continuity in cables, etc. etc. As an OT aside, my 8 year old son was having problems with his Scalextric set the other day, went and got my cheapie multimeter and started checking things for himself. His only question to me was what voltage range he should be using--so that shows how simple it is to do the basic stuff (and also how much of a chip off the old block the lad is!).

As for the OP, I'm afraid some detective work is needed. You'll need to work out whether the problem is with the mic, the cable or the interface by trying each of them separately. Find a friend with a mixer or PA system and plug your mic in to their stuff. While there, try your cable with a mic they know to be good. If the mic and cable are okay, then it may be the interface--but at this point you need to also check for operator error.

One final downer though is that EMU have more or less bowed out of the interface business (despite claims to the contrary) and they haven't release a new driver in almost 2 years. More and more people are starting to have problems that can be traced to driver issues since they aren't keeping up with updates to OS software.

Hmmm? Page 217 of the current Sound on Sound shows the range of Emu(Creative) interfaces including the 0404 usb. The ad being placed by handinhand.uk.net

However, going to the Creative site and pulling up Emu products the 0404usb usb is listed as "archived, end of life" and there is no W7 driver for it (there IS a Blista driver. Ho-ho-ho) .

I have been looking around for a S/H 0404usb for some time but I do have two W7/64 'puters so I shallnow eamil Hand in Hand and ask WTF is going on!

Reading the EMU user forums, there are some totally scathing comments from people who have been waiting since 2010 for Windows 7 drivers (beyond a flawed beta they released). There seems to be one guy at Creative/EMU who posts occasionally saying they're still there--but nothing beyond that.

Sad really. EMU were the exception to the "never trust Creative products" and made some really good products. Alas, it seems that, with the way Creative are treating EMU users, the "never trust Creative" rule has been proven in total.

Doubly sad because the Emu 0404usb was the top reccy for affordable AIs during the reign of XP.
The mic pres were said to be very clean and had a very useful 60dB of gain and the converters were also very good. The only small criticism seemed to be that the AI was not bus powerable but that would bother me not one jot.

thank you guys for your answers!! I tested microphone and cable to another sound card and it works fine. But on my sound card the microphone does'n work yet. I tried to connect it to the both existing xlr, turned off phantom power, gain max microphone preamp level, but no sound came. Tell me, can it work if if I use a wire hlr( female) to jack male and plug jack to my emu (because both jack ports working fine) Or maybe another connections methods are exists? (my sound card have opical and coaxil s/pdiff ports too)
 
But you would have to check that the microphone does not even need to connect the sound card to the computer? all available through direct monitoring. I'm right?
 
The jack inputs are made for line level inputs at a vastly greater level than your mic will put out.

However, your comment that the jacks work fine gives me a thought...

Could it be as simple as the line being the inner portion of the gain control but the mic being the outer?

Or is there a software setting to tell the box to use the XLR inputs rather than the jack ones? A quick look at the software section of the manual suggests there might be but isn't very clear.
