ATB = After the Burning. Okay - espskully might be the only other dude on this board that will understand that when we see ATB, we think of a bank in Alberta..... I've been abbreviating this too so I'm laughing at myself....

I've heard this a few times ;) and I think this is close to done for this version.... You have a real wall of sound going on here :cool:. Vocals could use a pinch of something to cut through the mix a bit more and so could the solo. Just to bring them out a bit. Of course I like my vocals way out front - maybe too much so ;).

Love the vocal performance/lyrics are way cool as always. The rhythm guitars are unique and sound great the way they are panned. Your new #1 sounds great - well worth the investment IMHO. That axe is a vintage classic.

Looking forward to hearing the next version....:)

A bank! At least I could've copped a credit Union!
I threw a TINY bit of reverb over final outs to see if it'd lift the vox - didn't!
I gave the entire mix a little tweak in the 125-250 range & that did wonders to the bottom end - some clever fella gave me that idea.
I may resort to a little magic woofle dust on the vox to bring them up a little. Can't hurt to experiment.
The solo - yeah - I may use just a little blockfish - I'll try it.
The new #1 isn't too shabby at all - doesn't cut through the mix as well as the old one - but then again I don't use the same signal chain - I had so many comments about excess brightness in the guitars I was afraid to.
Usually it's Bruno -> Ibanez renometre set to HI Boost -> Superbass MkII -> Realistic Highball Dynamic mic (ah yes, I kow but it worked - silly of me to give it away to a newbie recorder down this wasy).
Next project I'll replicate the OLD WAYS.

Sounds pretty good. At around 31 seconds, for some reason, it starts to sound real bass heavy (or is it just me?) and kind of messy. But it only lasts for a few seconds or so.

Main vocals sound slightly off center and to the right but that could just be me. Sounds good anyway. I like the chorus.

Sounds a lot better than the other songs I've heard by you (not saying the others are bad but this one just sounds a lot better to me).

There may be a few small adjustments you can make but really I think this sounds pretty finished.
 
Very rich and balanced mix. I'd try a 2 dB cut on the backing gtrs at 1 kHz with a wide filter to give the vox less competition and a bit more clarity. The gtr solo sounds great.

Ta mate. I'll check on the bass explosion - it may be an excessive swelling in the background effect - if it is I'll tame it & if it's not I'll have to find out anyway. thatnks for that detail.

Thankee sai! That's a nicely specific idea - 1Khz with a wide Q - I'll give that a go - easy to do when the instructions are that good.
The solo is good - I actually have a couple to choose from - this was the less obvious because of the clean tone (I usually go for distorted/fuzz effects) but there's nothing to cover up with effects as it works so well - special guest A did a sterling job, really had the mettle. What do you think of the thinning of instruments around the solo? I've had pros & cons - I just wanted to give it space to BE.
 
Wow - those background vocals really give it a big lift when they come in. Whole new feel to the song......something that was missing before...great vibe.

I would say take them down just a tad though, to establish them a bit more as background vocals and not so much equal in volume.

I'll leave you with that thought..... :cool:
 
Sounds good. With the main vocal more prominent it sounds like the vocal needs a little dynamics control... certain vowel sounds pop out over the rest of the vocal level.

I get a Hawkwind-vibe from this song.

I really enjoy the psychedelic guitars on this, very atmospheric.

I think the vox could come up a tad.

From what I can make out of the lyrics, they sound killer.
Real class.

I really like they way you sing here the pronounciation of the words is so cool, is that a Dialect?

I'll look at the vocal dynamics - it may be the b/vox as I dropped the Blockfish close mic preset on them - sounds good but unleashes the beast a bit. Ta for the listen & again the detail.

I'm a bit of a Hawkwind nut - well there earlier stuff anyway - if you like Hawkwind you should do a search online for Litmus - esp their album You Are here - heavily 'windy but with their own as well.
Thanks for the guitar comments. The lyrics began life in 1978 (70's music!!!) & I reworked them this year. Terry speaks in a fairly clear middle Australian accent - it carries through into his singing on this track. It's not the broad form we call Strine (as in Aust'rine) but is not unlike mine as we both grew up in the south western suburbs of Sydney. I can only guess but we're both anti cultural imperialism so it might be a subconscious peak.

I'll have to go back in & find my lost maracca (rice in a med bottle) it seems to have disappeared. Is the tambourine level & panning OK?

The reduction in background vocals that you did was right on the mark. Now it has a classic harmony sound to it. I'll let you work on the vocals as mentioned above. This version sounds pretty good, as it sits now. :)

Hello Folks,
This link will take you to another mix. I've evened out the vox a bit more - we aussies seem to have explosive vowels (& after a kangaroo chilli bowels too), boosted the rice shaker that'd been lost, dealt with the one spot that clipped slightly, altered the compression on the solo a little (Blockfish - industrial vocal with Air & low cut) & fiddled about a bit.
What d'yer reckon?

It's not as propulsive as I'd like & I'm a little concerned about the crash & ride.
Do the tambourine & rice shaker fit OK anyone?
 
Checking out the last link in this thread....like the jangly 60's type vibe.Great vocals...I think they sit nicely in the mix...background vocals add a lot when they enter the song....Like the guitar solo around 2:20...cool tune...what kind of guitar are you using, sounds kinda like a out of phase pickup tone...cool! I think you have a winner here , very nice job Ray!

Difficult name to get used to for all of us let alone you.
All guitars a Bruno Royal Artists. the wider panned are my Bruno #1, the closer toppier guitars are my original stolen Bruno.
They are 2 single coil jobbies - all played with the bridge PU selected. Out of phase position - nah - just the oddness of mid to late 60's Jap semi acoustics I think. No effects on any of the guitars except some Blockfish compression. Oh, the closer two are actually the guitar mic'd acoustically rather than plugged in.
Thanks for the kind words. Oh, the solo. I'll get details re that to you soon - I'll have to check with the special guest soloist. The solo rig is:
Strat into a Roland GP-8 then into a JCM900 mic'd with a 57.

Everything sounds cool. The songs is nice and pretty far in the mixing process.

The only thing I'd mention is that cymbals and crashes might sound cooler if lowered by 5dbs or so. So as to give them a more fainter and mixed in sound. Only saying that 'coz I've probably been trying to lower crashes and cymbals in mine. :)

The vocals are good. Even slightly higher would be cool. The guitar playing is pretty neat.
