To me the rode is too dark, but that's just me

The NT1 is one of the brighter budget LDCs on the market, in my experience.

The AT4040 will be more versatile. Also, look into the CAD M179.

I just picked up a 4040 for a drum overhead and love it. I also just ordered a second one. Plus you have the benefit of a pad and 80 hz cut switch.

never heard anything good about the nt1, have the nt2a and love it (but they are nothing alike)

4040 is good, but for 300$ i'd shop around a little more.
what are the adk's going for now?

have a look at them cad's

I only ever tested one. Maybe that one was defective and I got the wrong impression... It's totally possible since it was the store demo and the dumb sales guy had it feeding back on itself...

The at4040 is pretty flat which can be a good thing. The cad m179 sound pretty similar, but has a slightly different sweet spot(but its only $199 brand new).
For something with more flavor try the ADK Vienna or Hamburg.

I have one of the very first ones and find it to be pretty useful. I've come across threads though indicating that depending on when your nt1 was made, makes a big difference on how bright it is. Don't get me wrong, even though mine is useful, it is till one of the brightest mics I own. Don't know about the current NT1A though...
