The Art "Studio" MPs have{analog VU} metering, they are about $125.00.
Also has a limiter built into it .I've very rarely used the metering on it ..I set it by ear and use the recorder's meters.
I dont have one anymore but they are a good deal for the money.
Another possibility for a budget pre-amp is the Bellari MP105.
They typically sell for $100 or under at Guitar Center.
Be careful though, after spending some time with mine I could
hear a 60hz "hum", so I used an Ebtech Hum Eliminator to help
solve that problem rather than bothering to return the unit.
Maybe I just received a faulty wall-wart, YMMV.
Dom, I also have a V3Q and like it. Even though it's not technically a tube
pre-amp, it seems to make a vocal fatter like one, especially when the
EQ and compressiion are engaged. What mikes do you run through it?
The blue tube is more like a dual mp with a sovtek 12ax7 So it is better than an art dual mp with a phillips tube. it also has led metering which doesnt get pegged and the whacked out of adjustment. the blue tube was a nice fit for me because I have two ballanced inputs on my korg d8. but a tube mp is really all you need. I reccomend getting a groove tubes replacement for it because the current tube inside just isnt that good.
Ive got gt12ax7 white labels in the blue tube and my levelar and they now sound a world better to me.
I recently bought a Korg D1600 (sweet ass machine) and I want to warm up my distortion coming out of my Zoom 505II. I know to get a tube preamp, but where in the chain do I insert it? Guitar-Tube Preamp-Zoom 505II-Mixer-D1600 or Guitar-Zoom 505II-Mixer-Tube Preamp-D1600? What is the best way to get a tube sound recorded?

I use a mixer at that location to insert another multifects unit that has two channels so as to have two harmonies when using a harmonizer or just one and a chourus.
