Are my new monitors broken?

Hello again all...

I just hooked up a pair of new Event PS 5 monitors and have 2 problems...

First, when I am playing some synth pad sounds in the lower range, ONE but only one of my speakers puts out a 'rattle' from the cone itself. Is this bound to happen or should I expect more of my new monitors?

Also, if you are familiar with the volume knobs on the front, when the volume is lowered, the volume does not gradually go dow, it just stops when you reach the lowest point (However, the other one does work fine, but that is the one with the vibration noise in the cone.

I thought the Events were pretty decent, but these are my first pair...is something out of the ordinary here?

And yes, I did buy them new.

Micro.

You didn't mention if you'd isolated the problem to the speaker/amp combo or the source material. Switch the Left and Right input cables and play the same passage. Does the same speaker still rattle?

I loved the Event PS 6's when I tested them at the music store. It wasn't long after I got them home, however, that I experienced a similar trouble to what you are describing. My primary instrument is also a synth, and it has several voices that bring out a terrible "flutter" from those speakers. My best guess was that some of the heavy lows were pumping the woofer so fast that the airvents couldn't keep up, and caused the cone (or maybe it was the actual airholes) to make fluttering noises. Talk about irritating.

In the end, I went to a higher level of monitor and swapped for a pair of the Mackie HR824's. They have a filled interior, and the lowest lows are produced by the passive radiator gizmo. Although I do sorta miss all the extra ventilation those Event PS 6's provided, I needed something that can handle all a synth has to offer. It hurt my pocketbook, but I love the clarity I get from these Mackies.
