I’ve been using Logic and Final Cut on my iPad to make my guitar demo videos for our guitar shop. I’m using a MOTU micro book 2c as my interface and a ADK small condenser mic for recording acoustic guitar. The MOTU only has one mic input so I’m just recording mono guitar. My main goal is to make these demo videos as quickly and painlessly as possible. For the last few years I’ve just been using my phone to make a short video and post it, but it always sounds like a phone recording and I want our customers to hear what the guitar really sounds like. I’m doing very little to no post processing of the audio so I’m not really using much compression or EQ. It’s pretty easy to synch up the video with the audio. Final Cut is taking a bit to figure out but it’s coming. The best part about this set up is I can work silently in bed without disturbing my wife sleeping. One issue is that the iPad doesn’t always read that the interface is connected and when that happens I have to reboot the iPad which is annoying. Apple OS doesn’t seem to have any way to connect external devices other than its built in automatic way. So, if I’m in logic or Final Cut and leave it to check my email or watch a clip the interface is disconnected and when I go back to logic or FC it won’t read the interface anymore and I have to shut down the iPad and reboot it.
What I like about it is it only takes a couple of minutes to set it all up and it sounds good. It’s also very fast to edit and post. Final Cut is easier and faster than iMovie now that I am beginning to get familiar with using it.
I’m planning a trip to my mother’s house in Dallas in a few weeks and plan on making some kind of a record on this rig while I’m there.
Here are a couple of my first attempts:
