Mine was at 80 bpm, good job! :D

The idea was suggested that we do the vocal sections in 4/4 and then jump to instrumentals in 7/8...

Whaddaya think o' that?

It might work....

Actually, I was able to give yours another listen in the studio before I headed out the door (odd how different it sounds when you're NOT listening on the PC speaker at work) and I can hear where Tenkas was going with the modifiactions to your initial groove...
I started recording a pretty basic 7/8 scratch track, based on the canned drum line you supplied (simple modification) and will map it out with your supplied lyrical arrangement... I can give you a few samples to work with:

> Entire arrangement in 7/8

> Vox in 4/4 - Instr. in 7/8 (which, if we're running the vox at 4/4, then theoretically we should keep the TS to 7/4.. but that's just trivial semantics depending on who's playing the chops... It'll end up fitting...) :)

> Entire arrangement in 7 except for a perceived 'chorus' (gotta keep the lemmings interested sometimes...)

Then, once we get the collab rolling, all parts can be adjusted as seen fit...

I'm going to take off from work early today *cough cough, snicker* and will try and finish up recording these and get them posted...

Or... would you prefer me to send you the drum track(s) and you can lay down the bass line(s) and then post them as a solid rhythm track?

Actually, I would rather that you post them on NL5's server (he posted instructions on how to do it) and let Tenkas put his keyboards section on there first. That way I can hear both parts together and can write a solid bass line. I am not used to playing in 7/8, so I would need to rehearse it a bit.

I'll be waiting!!! :D

Awwwwwww... I have faith in you tho... Once you fall into the groove, you'll be counting in seven like... ummm... welll... like those guys who always count in seven.... :D

Since this is essentially going to just be a scratch track to (hopefully) get the creative juices flowing, I'll just post the link to it here...
Time has pretty much allowed for me to only lay down the one track... it's about 4 minutes and it's 7/8 from start to finish... I tried to follow your scratch track road map (small intro, 2 verses, chorus, 2 verses, chorus, solo area, chorus, outro) but I'm really not sure how accurate it is since it's just drums... I think it's close tho...

Anyway... if we wanna start with this and tell me what/where you want time sig changes, breaks etc, here it is:

Collab straight 7/8 time

Again.. it's pretty basic and the mix was just straight from my TD-8 into my MR8 with no 'fluffing' so take it for what it's worth...

:D

I gave it about 2 minutes of my time (at work, and for the first time in days I have a customer)....

I will listen more intently at home. I am going to download it and put in on my MR-8 and see what I can come up with.

Probably have something to share by Sunday...

tenkas,

I am intrigued by the idea of an online collaboration. I play guitar (and a few other things) and have been told I can sing o.k. Unfortunately, my February is booked up like a library. If you are still looking for people after that, shoot me a pm or an email to 'medscby' at yahoo.

ya my febuarys no good hows your july?
lets do lunch.

just playin with ya scrubs

OK, I downloaded the drum tracks and put it on my MR-8.... Now I need the organ track!!!! Tenkas, can you redo your track to match the song I put up? You original scratch track doesn't fit well, and it's about 2 minutes too short. The drum track is about 4 minutes long....

Post it so that I can download it and get my bass line done!!!!

OK, I'm still waiting.................................................................

That drum track has different snares. Is that supposed to be that way?

It's an electronic kit, and he was experimenting. It's only a scratch track, not the real one. The real one will be a .wav on NL5's server, not an mp3...

I've tried it a few times, but I can't seem to make it work.

Maybe we should go back to the 4/4 timing and do a 7/8 next time. This song is just too straight forward for a whacky time signature.... :(

I'm tinkering a bit with the 'rim' sounds... I just got the new Hart electronic snare and sometimes I hit it and sometimes I missed.. :o

I'm for that if you want...
I tinkered a little with the vocal phrasing as you had it, but in 7/8... It just seemed a bit jumpy...

How about this:
Intro in 7/8
'straighten up' :p to 4/4 for all verses and chorus

Drop back into 7/8 for the solo slot

Then outro at 7/8 or 4/4...?

I'm thinking more along the lines of staying 4/4 throughout. But maybe going 7/4 for the solo and then back into 4/4...

Also, how many measures did you count for the intro you did? I am not quite sure when the drums come in...

Has anyone else lost interest in this? It seems that we had a whole crop of "Oooh, pick me, I wanna do it", then all of a sudden, nothing....

Tenkas, I know you are busy with school, so if you can't get anything done, at least post a comment that you can't do it, so that we can move on. I would like to finish what I started, even if it means taking it back to the starting gate...

its just that...well... no one likes trombones.

and it needs more cowbell.

oooh, oooh, can I play the cowbell? I've been practicing my cowbelling. I think I've become quite an excellent cowbellist. Pick me!!!!!!

Rokket: I'm still up to sing something & maybe play some guitar, but I think I'll need to hear the song in all it's altered time signature glory before I know how things might fit.

After thinking about it, it seems that most of you do not really like the idea of the 7/8 and it seems that it doesn't fit well with the lyrics. That is why for now, I will only participate in embelishing (with keyboard etc) the structure you guys will do for this song. In a short period of time, I will post a midi file, or a backtrack of a song that has a 7/8 signature. So let's do this one in 4/4, and we'll go for 7/8 next time.

Suggestions? Am I right to suggest that?

thx

Yeah, you were right. So let's get this song going. We can keep it 4/4, and do a 7/8 thing next time....

Scrubs, you can download my song and work out the vocals as they are written.

Drummers, give me something to lay a bass track to. The canned drum machine track that I used was a good beat, but it needs some embellishment and human feel.

Let's do it. I want the bass line, everything else is up for grabs.

And the lyrics can be rewritten however you see fit, Scrubs!

I don't mind giving it a shot. I can only speak for myself when I say I've never written or played a song in 7/8. Sure, I've listened to a number of prog-rock bands who do that all day, but it is not my thing. I would be happy to explore the concept. I don't mind being pushed out of my comfort zone every now and then. But, modding a straight song into another time sig means that the lyrics most likely won't fit and will need to be rewritten. I am working on that. However, until I hear the completed song, I won't know what will fit and where. Tenkas, if you or someone else wants to take the initiative and lay down a full song, however you'd like to, then we can build on that. I dunno. Anyone???

The plan has been changed to just redo the scratch tracks that I posted, with better musicianship and a better singer! :D

So just rewrite the lyrics that were shit to fit the same melody and time sig... The 7/8 timing thing will come after that, and we will all be pulled out of our comfort zone (this can't be a bad thing at all)...
