anyone know of these power conditioners..(sjoko??)

That's "kinda" what I thought. THANKS Sjoko... you have the patience of a .....whatever has a lot of patience!!

I'll get several of the PowerVar 500Va units. If I need more down the line, or initially, I'll just get more of them. No single item that I will be using will draw more than 500 watts anyway. The computer will be the biggest draw, after my poweramps, would be my guess.

Depending on your amps power supply, you may not need to condition the power too much, if at all.

The three Alesis amps I have don't pick up anything from the mains... I can plug an electric drill into the same socket as the amps, and they won't pick up the whirring of the drill, unlike the rest of my gear.

Just a thought if you're looking to save money. Obviously, with older amps with giant power transformers this won't work so well.

Hope that helps,

In regards to the warranty issue I can't say I've EVER had anything blow up because of a power surge. The main reason for conditioning is to get rid of any noise in the power.

Not to belabor the issue, but .... what about this one:

If mix doesn't buy it, I might.

Sorenson also makes good stuff, I've used them for installing network gear in emergency rooms years ago when I did the IT thing for a large hospital.

The only thing I would note is that these units get very warm, and you absolutely must allow space around the top, back and sides of the unit so it can breathe. It has thermal protection, and if it gets really hot it abruptly cuts out to protect itself.

2" per side and 6" in the back, and 1U of open space above it is more than enough, assuming the back of the rack you mount it in is open.

Hope that helps,

I already ordered my stuff from Mr. Patchbay, and according to UPS is already on its way.

I suppose that looks like a good deal, and on the upper end of what I was really wanting to spend...actually...really a bit more. But after searching prices for the last week, that seems to be a lot of volt/amps for the money.

A new 500 watt Powervar retails for $350 or so... you do the math.....meaning for double the $$, you get 6 times the capacity. Seems kinda a no brainer, in that aspect.

I'd hop on it if that would suit your needs. ...and thanks for even thinking I'd want it first. That was over and beyond...especially "at the auctions";) !

I went with a friend to this amp repair place in town and the guy had a 1500va Topaz for $100. He just got it in and needs to test it but I'll probably snag it. Looks like a good score.

Well, I just got my Powervar units from Mr. Patchbay today, and was very disappointed when I opened the box. He sent me the smallest units Powervar makes (150 watt units), instead of the ones advertised on his site (500 watt units ...actually 480 watts according to spec sheets). I have emailed him and left a message on his answering machine. Hopefully I will be able to straighten this out. :( I really have no use for units this size, especially at the price I paid for them.

Wish the best for me....eh!!

I'll let ya know what happens...(should anyone really be interested:D )

Tex..if you don't get (assuming it works), I'd sure be interested and would be willing to make it worth your time...somehow.

Mr. Patchbay emailed back and said he would swap out a 1000Va unit for the ones I received. Hopefully that will work out...

I'm really sorry to hear that, I've had loads of stuff from Mr. Patchbay over the years, and have always been very happy.
If he does not send you the right stuff, email me and I will contact him.

thanks for the offer, Sjoko. It sounds like he really wants to get things corrected, so all looks good so far at this point.

I'll post with some final results, I suppose in a couple of days.

Mix have you tried the conditioners yet? I picked up the used one yesterday but we had a big storm last night and I didn't want to fire up the gear.

Have you noticed any increase in SNR?

ok...here is the latest. I just got my "new" power conditioner today from Mr. Patchbay. This was a 1000Va unit that was replacing the 140Va units the he sent by "mistake".(which I sent back).

First off, it was NOT the unit that he sent me pictures of that he said he had for sale...which was the Topaz I posted earlier. He sent me a used Best Power Technologies unit rated at 1000Va. When I opened up the box, the front cover of the unit fell off, and it was extremely dirty...fingerprints and all. Well..cosmetics.. I can get past that, but the front cover doesn't want to stay on great, but I suppose I can live with that too. Now...when I plugged the unit in and turned it on, it had a hum that made my flouresent lights seem whimpy. Same kinda frequency...a buzz...but VERY loud. This unit can DEFINATELY not stay in my control room. It is that loud. Ok...so..I suppose I can move the unit into a closet, do some rewiring...no big deal. But now the kicker, I think the unit actually ADDS noise to my system. My system is pretty quiet to begin with, so I pretty much noticed the noise when I plugged everything up thru it. I also tried using headphones to shield against the noise of the unit, and I do believe I was hearing the same buzz thru my system. I CANNOT really live with that. I paid $200 for this unit, plus the shipping of the other units back to him. This unit has a date on it that appears to be 11/92...so..11 years old or so.

So...did I get ripped? My feelings are to send this back too, cut my losses in shipping (it is heavy..26lbs), and call it quits.

Should this thing normally put out a buzz like I am getting...way louder than a computer fan...like a really bad ballast in a flouresant light, like I was saying.

oh...also..this unit was putting out 124 Volts... Is that right?

Also...anyone heard of "Best Power Technologies"? Doing a search, all I could find was them making UPS units at this point in time, but still in business. How would they rate as compared to the Topaz or PowerVar's? Seems those companies (from doing major research on this end as of recent), are much bigger players in power conditioning.

Help...I need answers...or it goes back this weekend.:(

here are some pics of the unit

OK, so this is the SECOND TIME you haven't gotten what you ordered from this joker?

He sounds like a junk dealer to me. Promises one thing, and sends out whatever the fuck he has lying around that week.

I'd report his sorry ass AFTER you get your money back, and he SHOULD PAY FOR SHIPPING!!!

Maybe Sjoko can tune the guy up and explain to him that fucking people around on this BBS isn't good for Mr Patchbay's biz..........
