If you have the rack space, its a very good idea. Some of the APC units are smaller than they used to be, only 2U. Every U available for gear is good

Yep, that matters big time. Most of the larger UPS (10,000W and up) require two or three phase power, and are spliced in.

Depending on your neighborhood, if you get two power drops, often they are taken from opposite phases on the pole to balance the load on the power grid.

Not that I'm recommending getting two 200A drops and wiring devices across both of them for more than one phase, thats a serious no-no

When selecting a UPS, try to find one that doesn't have so many fans in it - they will drive you crazy. I've got a few tricks to that problem, but it requires soldering and monkeying with the unit a bit. I did this to my pavilon PC too - I installed additional fans, but in series with the existing fans plus my new fans, I installed a string of diodes in series, so all the fans spin at a slower speed. i can still hear them, but its nowhere near as annoying when the studio is dead quiet.

I wonder how much hosipitals and such pay for their critical areas and installations like that.

Hospitals typically pay 4 times what a data center would for the same type of power conditioning, but its not because the products they use are drastically difference, just that they are insured by the vendor selling the power products.

This is because if a data center loses power, people don't die. They just get cranky

Yep, nothing wrong at all with spreading the load among several smaller UPS's. I prefer the 2000-3000W units because they are rack mountable, and can be tucked into a rack off the floor.

I *hate* sticking things on the floor.

ok...here is the latest scoop on the power conditioners that I have got from Mr. Patchbay.

He emailed be and said he has some more 1000Va conditioners, but they are NOW $362 listed on his site VS the originally priced $149.

I thought the$149 was kinda low...but the Powervar brand conditioner with a 500Va rating is only $99. (and after much internet checking seems to list around $350 or so).

I realize the $362 is still probably a good price as I am learning these units tend to be more the "cadallac" version of power conditioners, if I am not mistaken.

Next question...

Tripp Lite???
in the same ballpark as Furman, etc.? They seem fairly inexpensive....like $125 for 1000Va conditioners...$65 for 500Va...

I was hoping to get two 1000 watt Topaz units...but the $700 has me thinking...

Looks like the Powervar conditioners might have to be the answer.

I'd still like the hear what other people are using/doing. Anyone else?

Tripplite is good stuff, been using their power strips for years and years (the metal ones), good construction, and if the power item you purchase guarrentees safety of whats plugged into it, know that Tripplite does make good on their warranty.

In my case, I've had TV's and stuff blow thru these "cheapie" power strips (and I am not really looking so much to stop MASSIVE surges with the Topaz units and such...but more for "conditioning") and it was just as easy (or easier in my cases) to whip out the old homeowners insurance than deal with "Belkin" or whoever. Some of them require an estimate (or two) for repairs...send in the estimate with the original sales receipt, etc, etc and wait the two months to see if they replace your $35 power strip or not and say that they can't protect against lightning. Add a 35" TV into the equation for lugging to a repair shop, and so on.


So...you think a couple of $65 tripplite power conditioners are worth the money then....or save it for refreshments? (and get something that'll actually eliminate da noiz...)

COnditioning can be done with solid state or autotransformers, I have both actually for my studio. I have a massive transformer in the attic that can pass two legs of 120V @ 30A, if its fed 240V @ 35A. I intend to feed this to two Compaq 3000W UPS's for my studio, one feeding juice to hard disk recorders and computers, and the other UPS feeding all the music gear and a 25W lamp in case the power goes out, i can leave.

If you don't need the UPS functionality, the tripplite stuff is a good alternative, they do make nice stuff.

I just like UPS for anything with a hard drive, like my computer, and my hard disk recorders. I hate losing data. Done it enough that I should have slit my wrists years ago.

yeah...none of my takes qualify for "golden moment" status...if catch my drift, (or at least I am not worrying about losing data) and I am always backing up as I go thru my sessions besides. Infact, I pretty much save everything, and then go back and delete stuff ....

(no..actually they call me "Mr. first take"!! lol!)


For fear of sounding like I don't believe you...(and I do respect your opinions) I'd sure like to hear some more positives from a couple others on the Tripplite stuff. Especially VS the Powervar, as Mr. Patchbay has some good sounding prices on the Powervar and it's basically about the same price...but seems more "industrial"...
Now..the $700 was another issue... that's a lot of refreshments! Sounds like I am starting to talk myself outta the Topaz, eh?

tripp lite also make conditioners http://www.tripplite.com/products/conditioners/transformers.cfm, if you have a couple of thousand $$'s spare

which are way beyond the power strip option. Please accept that for audio you need a proper conditioner, not a glorified power strip or surge protection strip

sjoko...I am glad you are seeing this thread again..Thanks for replying again... [let me bore you again] But I found some tripplite conditioners that are really inexpensive... not the powerstrips... Like I was saying... $125 for a 1000 watt conditioner and half that for a 500 watter...around 65 bucks.
And they are being sold as conditioners...NOT strips...
I'm too lazy to go back and find the link again, but I am sure what I saw.

and...I mean $ is $... wouldn't it make sense to get 4 or 5 powervars rated at 500Va each for $400 or $500 total, rather than two of the 1000Va units he is selling for MORE than twice the price of the 500 watt units? ($725 bucks approx.)

They're a substantial savings over the Powervars as well.
(I'd buy a couple of the LC1200 and be done with it...$150 savings for my wants of 2000Va)
