Anyone here use fruityloops?

I use fruityloops to make beats/drum loops. Who here uses it and can create good loops with samples? I try to use samples outside of fruityloops because most fruity samples are technoish.

-Also how do you sustain the bass lines whenever you want, and stop the bassline sustain, because sometimes I try to sustain it by clicking on the Loop points option and it starts playing at the beginning of the song when I didn't intend it to play till a few verses later?
 
How about setting up the bass line in piano roll? You can make each note as long or short as you want.
 
samples

all you have to do is search the internet for drum samples..you can find some very natural acoustic drum samples...however you will not get them to sound just like a human was actually playing..there is a humanize feature you can tinker with to try to make it as believable as possible though :). I would be interested to learn more about this piano roll feature..i had an earlier version of fruityloops that didn't have that but now i have version 3.4 and would like to know how to take advantage of other features it has.

Right click a channel and select "Send to Piano Roll" and about 5 minutes later you'll be in virtual heaven :)

I've tried using the piano roll but this is my problem:

I have a 1 sec sample of a bass line, and I paste it into the piano roll as a long line. I thought it would play through the entire line, but it just played the 1 second sound and the went through the rest of that green line length without any bass sound, like it stopped like a regular sample in the sequencer.

-How do I keep the bass sustained that is a 1 second long sample.
 
Use a bass sample that's looped (you have to do this outside of fruity) or use one of the many awesome Fruity synths.

Where and how can I get the bass sample looped?

-Which fruity synth will let me loop the bass sample?
 
SoundForge and several other editors (Fruity sells one called EZEditor) will let you loop samples. The precise method to do it depends on the tools you have.

None of the synths will let you loop your bass sample, though you can load it into the 404 or 3xosc as the oscillator source and see what happens. I was talking about making a separate bass sound with the synths, you can approximate most elctornic bass sounds you will hear with them.
 
Is there a step by step tutorial where I can read it and create a good hip hop and rock bass lines? Or atleast can someone help me learn a little about using 404/oscillators?

Fruity is geared towards making loops, not playing loops, as odd as that may sound at first.

In other words, with fruity you make your own bass lines from samples or synths...from scratch. You don't usually use pre-existing loops.

That's not to say that you *can't* use a looped bassline in fruity, you'll just have to trigger it over and over, which means that you'll first have to manually adjust the tempo in fruity loops until it perfectly matches the bassline, which wouldn't be precise.

Software like Sonic Foundry's Acid is more geared towards playing pre-existing loops.

Ok, I think you need some basics!

Fruity loops is a mix of sampler, sequencer, and synthesizer technology. First, some definitions:

Sampler: a device that can record and playback audio samples. Often times it can tweek the samples in certain ways...like stretching or adding effects.

Sequencer: a device used to trigger other devices, like samplers, at specified times.

Sample: a pre-recorded audio sample, like a drum hit, usually triggered by a keyboard or sequencer or combination of the two.

Synthesizer: a "generator" of sound, usually triggered by a keyboard or sequencer or combination of the two.

Fruity loops is a sequencer that can be used to trigger samples or synths. It works usings patterns, or groups of patterns aranged into songs or parts.

When you start fruity, you're presented with a blank pattern, pattern number one. You'll see a number of channels representing the default synths and samples that fruity creates for you. Each tick in each channel represents a time at which you can trigger the synth or sample used by the channel. If you click the 4th beat on channel two, then when you hit play, the fourth sample on channel two will be triggered.

Now, if you require your synth or sample to play different "notes", then that's when you want to use the piano roll editor. The piano roll editor works very similiarly to the regular beat editor, except that where you click vertically determines the pitch of the note that will be produced.

With that information, fire up fruity loops and start making noise with it. Once you've made noise for a good hour or so you'll have most of it figured out, it's that easy to use!

I already got the basics of fruity loops down, been using it for a while but occasionaly not a lot. I don't know some of the advanced techniques though like holding a sample long enough to create bass lines and stuff.


here what I tried to do to hold a bass line:

I got my bass sample, and loaded it into the sequencer.

Then I opened up piano roll and I placed a marker on the desired note. I lengthened the marker and I tried playing it and it just played the 1 second bass sample and didn't hold the bass line as I wanted it to.

-I tried messing with the envelopes but I don't know how to really use them that great.

-Any step by step procedures for holding a 1 sec bass note somehow as long as I desire it to?
 
Ok, I'm sorry I misunderstood.

That's actually a much harder problem. You would have to use samples with "loop points", and even then it's difficult. If you load a sample and check the "use loop points", you should be able to draw the length of the note using the piano roll editor (if the loop points work, I've had trouble with this in the past but I have made it work once or twice).

Samples don't naturally contain any information about how they should should as you "hold" a note, so it's impossible for fruity to do so!

The best way to go about this is to use a synth for your bass. Then you're offered full control, and generally it'll sound better. Oh, or a soundfont...which is sort of like a synth, but comprised of (usually) real samples at various velocities with built in loop points and the like.

(oops I should clarify that in order to use loop points in samples, you need samples with loop points defined)
 
Also, if you're trying to get a "natural" bass line to enhance your music...good luck. I tried that route for a long time before breaking down and buying a cheap bass. :(
