Anybody using the msr24s out here?

Most of it's going to be the same anyway. The servo controls, the basic adjustment pots for the channel cards. I'm not completely sure about the channel card layout though, whether it's just a different daughterboard or whether the main card is also different.

Can everyone talking about Toft, TL audio radar or anything not related to the MSR24S, especially Mackie, please go away and take a cold shower, or take something stronger.

As far as I remember the only difference between the S and the DBX machines was the noise reduction cards. There may be some recalibration to do if you swapped over say from a S to a DBX card, but they should just slot in.

With circuit diagrams regarding the S noise reduction, the only circuit digram you get is the mother card (large card that covers 2 channels of the recorder) the actual S card (one for each channel) is mounted on this card, these are made under licence from Dolby and you won't get the circuit diagram from Tascam as they won't have it. I have attached some images to show what I mean from an article I wrote about changing the caps.

Also there were 2 versions of the Dolby S card, I am talking about the MSR16S but could be the same on the 24S, as they started using micro caps on the later cards where by the early cards had to old larger caps. The later cards were a pain when the caps went out of spec as they are almost impossible to replace unless you get a specialist micro solder person to do it, the early cards were easier and I have found that they seems to last longer, in fact I have never had to change a cap in an old card yet. I was having trouble with my MSR16S and was lucky enough to buy a parts machine which is where I found that the dolby cards were different, I swapped them all out to the old version and the machine has worked fine ever since.

Fella's, I have no problem with the thread thus far so lets keep it going But my biggest complaint right now is that, 1" tape for the MSR24 is like $165 per roll whenever I started using it back in the mid 90s, $65 per roll was expensive to me and my clients !!I wish there was a way to get it down to (considering inflation) around say....$95 per roll ???

I reuse tape and let the customers rent the tape. My main problem is that I prefer 456(which is hard to find) instead of 911 and other alternatives.

I just never liked the idea of using tape over and over.In fact I never erased anything that I worked on for anyone.When I was in the business(part time) either they would buy the roll(s) of tape from me at my cost ,are I'd include it into my price estimate on the recording deal.I still have clients names on tapes that they never came back and got from yrs. back.Id never erase them either cause its always nice listening and hearing what I did back then.I do have tape labeled with my name on them, probably with a lot of stuff I forgot about that Id never erase either.To sentimental and plus i just may do some re-mixes with fresh ideas.Anyways im still waiting to find a tape company with decent prices on 1" tape but until then I have enough blank in like new condition to do some good music on..........

I have been using a MSR-24S for the last 9-10 Years. Just had to fix the Dolby noise issues but it's still going and I love this machine.

Sorry Im just seeing this post but man I still got mine and had issues with the Dolby also but think it is fixed now. Had it lent out to a good friend and just got it back.Im ready to get to using it again!!!
