I am currently in the midst of setting up for 5.1 audio and video production. I have the Digi002, Wavelab5, 5 Event Tr8N's, a KRK 10" sub, a DVD burner, a professional video camera and most of the other essentials.

Is there anything else I really need, or need to know?

What problems have you guys run into doing 5.1?

I know it is a good idea to have a bunch of "matched" mics which I have but how should I be recording sounds? I have seen people using 6 Oktava mk012's and other cheap stuff. I was going to use 6 SM58's. Is this a good choice?

Any info would help at this point.

Thanks

I have the capability, but I haven't used it in anger yet.

What are you recording? I don't think 6 58s is gonna help anything.

As far as I know Le is not capable of surround sound. I could be very wrong. Maybe you could enlighten me on this.

ditto, i don't think pt LE will run 5.1 surround. however, i know nuendo 1.6 and up will which is what i am using.

If you're planning on doing this as a business venture, I would give some serious consideration to the potential market there may be. Some of the top post houses I know of get maybe one or two projects per year that require surround. The market really isn't there yet. I'm sure it will be at some point, but right now, there is no real "killer app" for it, and no one really even knows if it's going to be the "wave of the future." It's mostly a novelty at this point for anything other than some feature films -- good luck landing one of those. :D For that reason, I wouldn't take it very seriously, other than as a fun hobby or side project -- which would be totally cool, by the way.

The Oktavas idea wouldn't be too bad, actually. I don't know about the 58's, though, dude. :D I wouldn't want to have to go there. Those are more designed for close-micing applications on louder sources (music-related: close-mic'ed vocals, drums, guitar amp, etc.).

Keep in mind, also, that you're probably not going to need a 6th mic for 5.1. :D

Well, First I wouldnt be using the LE for 5.1, I would route into Wavelab5 were you have up to 8 channels of surround sound.

Second, as part of my commercial studio services I want to be able to record a bands live performance (audio and visually) then create a 5.1 DVD which they can sell or keep.

As for using the SM58's it is just the mic I have most of. I think I will get some good SDC's and use those instead. I have 2 Oktava mk012's maybe I will get 3 or 4 more of those.

That's actually not a bad idea. Good luck with that, and let us know how it goes.
