Any tips on dealing with proximity hum?

The buzz that doesn't show up until you turn the guitar's volume knob up and varies by which direction you're facing. It's noticably worse with single coil pickups (I guess that's they call 'em humbuckers) I have to gate the shit out of my guitars esp. the rick bass. I hate that. There's got to be a better way. By the way, there are neon signs next door but is there range of interference that great?
 
The hum may well be to do with your set-up. It can be down to the guitar and amp but the leads are often a main source for intefierance (sp). Quite a few people spend money on guitar(s) and on amplification but try and save money on getting cheap leads-not very clever. There will most likley always be a hum (don't you like it when you know your plugged up and the volumes up-the hum can be good-Lou Reed said).

if you are talking specifically about recording, then it could be because you are facing a monitor, like your computer screen. I know that single coils hum quite badly while the monitor is on, when I track I usually just turn it off, and then turn it back on when I am done with the take. If you are not using a computer, then it could be form the Neon signs, those things give off all sorts of bad vibes. If not, it could be bad wiring and stuff on your guitar. What amp are you usuing too? Some have tons more hum with when the signal is coming in at 10.

Yeah, I heard about the monitor thing so I checked. It didn't seem to make a diference. We weren't all that close to it when we recorded anyway. The neon signs are in the corner grocery next door and although the building almost touches mine, the signs are a good fifty+ feet away. The guitar was a tele into an Ampeg Gemini I. The bass was a Rickenbocker into a Fender blues DeVille, wich was especially awful. It produced a great sound but the buzz is actually audible over the playing! Of course, you don't really notice once all the other instruments are down but I know it's there and it bugs me!
