I am looking for a microphone to record my fender 57 twin 2x12. I have looked at both the sennheiser e609 and the e906. I know these are common to use as well as the shure sm57. I was wondering if there is anything else out there would be better than these three for the money. Also if there are any vintage pieces that I might find useful as well.

Thanks

A sennheiser 421 is also a good choice. But it really depends on what the amp sounds like and what sound you are trying to get.

There is no 'perfect in all situations' mic.

Out of all of those, the SM57 is the safest choice.

You cannot go wrong with an SM57. And since your amp is a '57 it should be quite a synergistic pair! ;)

Any Ribbon you can lay your hands on or a senn 421 or an AT 4033

I've always loved condensers on amps (but I also don't own any nice dynamics)

I've had good sucess with a SDC in the back of a cab and a matched SDC in the front, also a nice LDC in the front can really bring out the sound in an amp (IMO)

Screw the SM57, get an Audix i-5. They are the same price, and compared side to side (in my opinion) give a better result. Just my $00.02 ;)

Thanks for the responses, I will check out these other microphones as well. I already have a sm57 and it does sound good, but kind of mediocre and overused. The sennheiser e906 will probably be my default choice.

If you're solo recording and the room doesn't interfere, the MSH-1O, 1K are a treat! . . .and the MSH-4---you could probably swallow it and get a good sounding recording.

You probably should have a 57 around, especially if you want to hear what you've heard on thousands of tracks already. I usually use an e609s for live backline because of its designed-in convenience for this application (an advantage that gets minimized the bigger the stage gets).

I like to add a Vintage C12 to capture the room ambiance. :D

may i ask how that happened?

it was my iwn fault, I had a lapsed moment & stupidly STUPIDLY left the trailer hatch open on the way to a gig & only lost my leads bag & 80% of contents. The PL80 EV was untouched

I lucked out in the face of my rank stupidity

Perfect advice......I would only add the EV RE20 to this. In fact, there is an AT4033 on ebay right now, current bid is about $160. I would bid on it, but I just bought an ADK.

fullcompass.com will sell the Apex 210 ribbon for $6 bucks more than what the E609 is selling for.....and the ribbon will blow ANY budget dynamic outa town on a guitar cab. I didn't believe it myself at all, until I tried it. Now I have a Fathead II ribbon permanently planted in front of my cab. I use the 210 for voice.

For only $6 bucks more, I would not go near the E609 with a 10 foot mic stand while there are ribbons to be had. Just imo, for sure, but I never have liked the E609. Every other mic I tried on my cab sounded better than the E609, with the exception of the Audix i5.

You can't go wrong with a sm57, it has proven to be very efficient in every style of music and guitar amplifier throughout the years

For some distorted cabs, I use AKG D770 (discontinued cheap dynamic instrument mic), which I often use wherever most folks would use an SM57. Usually, I use Shure SM7B. Here's the weird one- AKG C2000B. More often than not, especially on clean cabs, the 2000 has beaten out every mic I have, including some far more expensive mics. As a rule, I put up the SM7 and the C2000B, and use one or the other, or a blend of both.-Richie

I have a couple e609's, and they work well, coupled with a condenser of some sort (I used to use a SDC, now I use an LDC) - always gives a nice thick sound on clean guitar.

I have yet to try a ribbon, but do in fact have an Apex 210 on order (fullcompass ran out of em!). I know its a cheap, cheap ribbon, but I'll update when it comes :)

The royer 121 is quickly becoming the new standard for guitar cab micing

MD421 or GT44 (if you can find one used). The SM57s work great sometimes.

I would add that you are far more likely to find a dynamic mic will work better in almost all instances except the GT44 which is a SD tube condensor mic.
