Are there any pres out there that give a similar sound as the Electro-Harmonix 12ay7 pre? I am in need of a single or double channel preamp that will give me a similar sound, however if i buy the 12ay7 i will also need to purchase a transformer to change the signal from balanced to unbalanced (into a 2496 soundcard), which i dont really want to do. Any suggestions?

You would need to do that with pretty much any preamp, as every preamp I've ever used puts out balanced line level signal.

really? i never had to do it with my mic200... well, in any case, do you have any suggestions for a nice preamp for strictly rap vocals? Would I be better of with a clean pre or a colored? i will probably be using it along with an at4040...

The AT4040 is a good mic. I don't think preamps need to get quite that specific, i.e. like a preamp for rap vocals or a preamp for rock vocals. Maybe classical recording will have a more specific type of preamp, but I think good sounding vocals are good sounding vocals.

Preamps for around $500 or less would be the Groove Tubes BRICK and the Grace 101, to name a couple. The Grace would be the clean variety, and the BRICK is a tube preamp, but a good one for the price. I haven't heard the EH 12ax7 preamp, so I can't comment on it.

i was just searching the forums about the GT Brick... I was kind of hoping however to get a pre around the $300 pricerange. Maybe I could pick up a used GT Brick for around that price?

Quite right SA but there is a well documented hum issue with the EH pre if going from the balanced out to an unbalanced input.
