we want to create a basic studio so whomever wants to record their stuff could come over. every studio that i have went to over the years just charge. music is shoud be allowed to be created without a price on it. Yet, we have no idea what to begin with. Anything would help guys.

A very basic setup is gonna be a computer with at least 512mRAM, a 7200rpm hard drive, a soundcard, recording software, and monitors.

You also have the various Digital Workstations that have 4, 8, 12, 16, 24 tracks etc, effects, amp simulators, equalizer, reverb, chorus/delay, drum patterns, CD burner etc.
There are some good, very versatile units out there that allow you to record, mix and master and burn to CD. Most units will have a USB port for connecting to a PC.
A decent pair of near field monitors will also be a must for achieving a mix that will translate well onto other stereo systems, eg car, boom boxes, home stereo's.

I would want a big budget Seriously, this stuff isn't cheap!

You need to sit down and consider exactly what you want to achieve. How many tracks do you want to be able to record and mix? Digital or analogue? If you go digital, standalone recorder or computer. Do you want to mix on a mixer or in the box? You also need to consider treating the rooms of your studio, which is just as important as the gear you use. All these factors will change the selection of gear you choose. I mean recording a simple guitar/vocals song has much different to recording say a metal band.

If I were starting a studio I would want:

24 simultaneuos I/O tracks going into Sonar for recording, editing and effects.
Inline mixer for external mixing of tracks. Just me but I don't like mixing with a mouse.
A nice collection of mics.
Decent near field monitors.
A couple of nice preamps
Some outboard compressors etc.

Who says studios charge for creating music? The musicians do that. Studios charge for RECORDING it. Personally, I think gas and food should be free too, but the businesses that provide it don't see it my way either.

OK first define your goals: who are these musicians? Folk guitarist? Rock band? String quartet? Symphony orchestra? All of the above?

Second, tell us what you have, in terms of gear, space, and money.

I think you'll find when you have done a quality job on a studio, you'll understand why they charge money.
