Maine winters are long ...

... so roughly February, I reached out to a local band - literally 2 miles from where I live - and asked them if they were interested in doing any recording. They enthusiastically replied in the positive, as they'd just rewired their whole practice space to do a recording project. As it turns out, what they were looking for was someone to produce their efforts. They had about a dozen songs they wanted to track. We wound up w/ 17.

This is one of them. The ensemble calls themselves "The Frank Burns Band" and they've been playing together since the 80s. They're a bunch of laid back hippies who are in the early part of my decade in age, so we speak the same musical language.

I employed some of my new AI assisted technology - which I must confess I used the opportunity to guinea pig exploration of the new tools w/ this project.

I'm just starting to, after 6 mos into things, wrap up the tracking. The group is like herding cats. Sweet people. Not well organized.

SOME of the works are in their final mix stages. This is one. What I'm hoping for is, when listening, the practiced ears hear to point out any rough patches they might hear. IF there are NO rough patches, then I can punch the "Publish" button. But anything that occurs to your ears as a listener as being "out of place" is what I'm looking to solicit.

I like the piano. A production opinion, I would have liked the vocals dryer. Maybe the mix of wetness below, with an EQ change to sit under it. Wet using on one set of EQs, natural voice using something else or wet vocals real wide, and natural down the middle.

I liked it, but the way you treated the vocals were a move I thought took away from the production.

Everything else seemed really well blended. you were length, the jam section could be reduced. I'm a pop guy, I shoot for 3-4 minute mark, so take that comment with a grain of salt. Nice mix, good song. Well done.

Even he says he was, at first, hesitant - but the more he listened, the more it grew on him - even if he thought it strange treatment at first as well.

One of those deals where the vocals are really good and you want to augment, not take away. I do agree with the spacey, that is why I wouldn't remove it. I get what the singer is sayin'. I guess more of a balance.

The thing that stands out to me is the snare. It sounds too strong, especially over the vocals. It doesn't sound even with the other drums, like on rolls. I usually like the snare to have a good snap, but it seems like it's standing out a bit too much. It might be a good place to duck them with the vocals via a compressor or limiter, or automate the volume during the vocals sections.

Nice Well captured performance ! Loved all the vocal harmony.
Mix wise .. I too thought the vox delay was "slightly" loud. The other thing that grabbed my attention was the driving guitar part against the piano. I'd try panning the guitar to the left side and the piano leaning further to the right. I think it was mainly the high piano notes coming in on the left that sounded off to me. I think the guitar was being covered up a little too much.

Really liked when the backing vocals came in. The delay on lead vocals kind of grew on me, did not care for it at first, but grew on me, love the piano! Strings/synth at the end sounded cool!

I agree that the delay on the vocal is a bit much. Maybe just bring it down a tad so it's not so noticeable. To me, it sounds more like a special effect right now - i.e., something that would be applied to one specific line for effect - instead of something that's augmenting the sound. And I also agree with Mark about the guitar/piano relationship. Other that that, nice job overall!
