Sorry if this is something answered in another thread. It may have been worded differently. I'm sure someone has a quick fix to this, I just don't want to lose the original track. I have a guitar track, Track 5. I want to have the track silent until it comes in at 0:48. So, what I'm wanting to know is, can I add silence from 0:00-0:48, the guitar comes in at that point, and then, put silence in the next segment until it is needed again. So forth and so on. I need to know If tracks can be done like that as it would certainly help not trying to use the mute button so often on mixdown. I used the silence and set in and out points 0-:48, but on playback, the guitar did not come in at :48 where I thought the silence would drop out and the music begin. Sorry if this has been posted before. I'm sure there are plenty of people know what I'm talking about. I've had the recorder for a year, but only had several opportunities to record. I lack the needed experience. Thanks in advance for any help.

First let me say - if you don't want to lose the performance- choose an empty available track and clone your performance to that track. Then you'll have it saved and you can be sure that an identical copy is safe somewhere else.

If I am understanding you correctly- there are a couple of different ways to get this done that will essentially give you the same result. You can select your performance start and end points and then use the "move paste" option in the edit menu and set that performance section at any place you want by simply moving the time selection to that point and Performing the edit. Then you can use the silence function in the edit menu to silence anything before or after that performance area- again using the start and end points. I'm not looking at the edit menu right now but I also think there is a "open" function in the edit menu. You again would set your start and end points of the area you want to open up before your performance section.

The "open" function is probably the easiest of the two I just mentioned.

Also remember that the undo function is your friend. Nothing has to be permanent in the digital Realm. On the Tascam dp32sd- in the preferences menu- you can set the levels of undo to 10. This way if you ever do something that you didn't intend to or that you don't like you can just hit the undo button and go back a step to where you were and it's totally lossless. So you can experiment with what I described above until you get it right. And if you saved the performance to another track you'll always have that as a backup as well.
