What's this button do?
I have been thinking about getting the MXL v67m and a Behringer B1, $99 each, $198 total. Would it be a better idea to go for, say, a AT 4033 for $299 (or $200 used)? The v67 gets so many thumbs up, but so does the AT. I have an NT1 (I know, I know...) 58's, 57's, ECM's, etc. but the Nt1 is the only LD I have. How would the Behringer + V67m stack up to a 4033?

Thanks,
Pete

I'd say either would be very good. I own both, and I give each the thumbs up. Gives me two nice "flavors" if you will to my arsenal. The V67G is aggressive and focused in the lows and lower-mids. The B-1 is a little more hyped in the high-end, with a noticeable bump in the 12khz range. Surprizingly smooth, though.

That's not to say that I wouldn't like to have the AT, either.

The really nice part is that the B1 came with a case, shockmount, and a windscreen. They fit both, so I can use them on either mic.

The way I look at it, I was able to get the V67 for a great price. And for an extra $100, I was able to land a shockmount, a popfilter, and a pretty damn nice case. Plus a nice extra microphone to go with it. :)

check this out for the 4033......

the v67 is less harsh than the NT1....you will notice some difference especially with a good preamp.......

I rather the sound of the v67 and the Studio Projects C1 over the 4033 (personal preference) so if it was me id go for the v67.....its a winner hands down in the price/performance category.......

Chess.. Thanks, that's what I was looking for, someone who had experience with both. Also, I saw it the same way... nice case, nice shockmount, free mic:D We all know the V67 is a good buy.

Gidge, I don't know about "nice" pre, but I just picked up an Audio Buddy (partly thanks to your appreciation of it as a good budget pre) and I have yet to use it with my D1600.
Thanks for the info. Anyone else?

As always, it seems like Harvey is right on with his latest recommendations he made on the Marshalls. I think that company owes him a trip to Disney Land or something.

I didn't think it would be possible, but the 603 really is everything he says. Never in a million years did I think I would see a mic that outdid so many others in bang-for-buck get "outbanged." But the Oktava mc012? That just defies all known logic to me. I've worshipped that mic. :) Yea, I guess that makes me kind of a dork, huh?

I do think the B1's deserve a serious look, though. I don't care what anyone says, sometimes you just need something to sound "brighter." And this mice does bright, while still safely out of harm's way of the dreaded H-word. I wouldn't use it on everything, but then for $100 it's not supposed to be a jack-of-all mics. You're supposed to use it when your V67 isn't bright enough, or gets too bassy. You're also supposed to let the v67 use it's shockmount when it needs one. Fits perfectly.

My next venture will likely be the Marshall V93 or 2003. I need something totally flat for . . . well, those occasions when I need something flat. The Behringer 8000's are very nice, but my room sounds like doggy doo-doo. And the Behringers kind of draw attention to that fact. I'll save those for when I upgrade accoustic treatment.

Then I'm done with mics for a while. I'm in serious trouble, here. Im a cheap mic addict. Someone please help.

What about any of the other mxl stuff? I know that the 2001 seems to be junk, and I have heard "stay away from the 1000 level stuff" but what about the V63? Or the V57m, which I saw on ebay the other day? Any experience with other MXL's?

Good question. They seem to get rave reviews from people who buy them - but then the kind of people who buy them probably haven't owned a condenser before, I imagine. :) Those are venturing in to levels of cheapness I won't even dare go go.

the 67 seems warm and round in comparison to the 4033 but the 4033 cuts through the mix more so in my opinion and has more uses.. but then again im using mackie pres and we all know how "warm" they are.. hehe.

Yea, but we've been saying is that for the same price, you could get both the Marshall and the Behringer B1. Should the V67 have trouble cutting through, then you could switch over the the B1.

I still think the AT would be the ideal "trifecta" to both of these mics. The V67 has a very pronounced bass response and proximity effect . . . the AT has an almost "honky" midrange presence to it which is great for micing guitars. While the B1 is very similar to the Rode NT1/NT2 with a very pronounced high presence boost around 12K, making it ideal for when you need a "brighter' sound.
